English to Spanish: In her Bed (Desperadoes 2) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English An hour later, Elizabeth wiped the perspiration from her forehead with the back of her hand and gazed at the two men lying quietly on the bed. The one she hadn’t been able to sleep in since Durango had left. A swell of emotions threatened to tear up her eyes, but she bit back the tears. She wouldn’t let Durango see how much his leaving had affected her. She would need to stay focused on these men’s injuries.
Landon, who she’d cared for dearly, partly due to the fact he’d tried to talk Durango out of joining the gang with him, appeared weak from loss of blood. The bullet had lodged in the fleshy part of his upper thigh, making him lose lots of blood. But the powerful way he’d carried her and tossed her onto the couch and then held her beneath his big body made her realize he was a very strong man, despite his wound. He would be fine given some rest.
Tyrell’s wound was a bit more serious. He would require bed rest for a few days due to his wound. She’d found the bullet dangerously close to his left kidney, but thankfully it hadn’t hit anything vital. He would be sore, and he’d been very lucky. Both men had been very lucky.
Stupid fools.

Source text - English UN refugee agency urges safeguard compliance before any returns begin under EU-Turkey deal
The United Nations refugee agency today urged parties to the recent EU-Turkey agreement on refugees and migrants to ensure all safeguards are in place before any returns begin.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) “does not object to returns of people without protection needs and who have not asked for asylum, providing that human rights are adhered to,” UNHCR Chief Spokesperson Melissa Fleming told reporters in Geneva.
According to a statement issued by the EU, the sides agreed that all new “irregular” migrants crossing from Turkey into Greek islands will be returned to Turkey, starting from 20 March, and for every Syrian being returned to Turkey from Greek islands, another Syrian will be resettled from Turkey to the EU.
Across Greece, which has been compelled to host people because of closed borders elsewhere in Europe, numerous aspects of the systems for receiving and dealing with people who may need international protection are still either not working or absent, she said.
There are currently around 51,000 refugees and migrants in the country, 46,000 on the mainland and 5,000 on the islands. Recent arrivals spiked on 29th March at 766 after several days of arrivals averaging about 300 people a day.
English to Spanish: Income convergence or persistent inequalities among countries? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Economics
Source text - English Income convergence or persistent inequalities among countries?
Income inequality has become an issue of major concern for citizens and Governments around the world. The recent literature on the subject has documented a clear trend for income inequality to increase within most countries. One exception to this trend is in Latin America where income inequality actually decreased in most countries between 2000 and 2010. Two factors contributed to this result: an improvement in the level of education of workers entering the labour force and the adoption of large transfer income programmes for poverty reduction (Lustig, 2015). Despite the improvement seen in Latin America, the issue of income inequality remains at the centre of the political debate in the region.
In contrast to the trend seen in within-country inequality, income inequality between countries has been on a general trend towards convergence between developed and developing countries since 1990 (Bourguignon, 2015; Milanovic, 2010; Stiglitz, 2013). Once adjusted by purchasing power parity (PPP), average per capita income of developing countries has increased steadily in relation to the average per capita income of developed countries. In particular, the tendency to narrow the income gap between developed and developing countries accelerated since the early years of the 2000s. In light of this evidence, Bourguignon places the major challenge in the growth of inequality within countries.
English to Spanish: Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean (Bolivia v. Chile) General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law (general)
Source text - English THE HAGUE, 24 September 2015. The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, today delivered its Judgment on the preliminary objection raised by Chile in the case concerning the Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean (Bolivia v. Chile).
In its Judgment, which is final and without appeal, the Court
(1) Rejects, by fourteen votes to two, the preliminary objection raised by the Republic of Chile;
(2) Finds, by fourteen votes to two, that it has jurisdiction, on the basis of Article XXXI of the Pact of Bogotá, to entertain the Application filed by the Plurinational State of Bolivia on 24 April 2013.
The Court’s reasoning
The Court recalls that, in its Application, Bolivia seeks to found the jurisdiction of the Court on Article XXXI of the Pact of Bogotá. Chile, on the other hand, argues in its preliminary objection that the Court has no jurisdiction under that provision to rule on the dispute submitted by Bolivia. Citing Article VI of the Pact of Bogotá1 , it contends that the matters in dispute in the present case, namely territorial sovereignty and the character of Bolivia’s access to the Pacific Ocean, were settled by an arrangement set out in the 1904 Peace Treaty, and that they remain governed by that Treaty. Bolivia responds that the sole subject-matter of the dispute is the existence of an obligation incumbent upon Chile to negotiate in good faith Bolivia’s sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean, and the breach of that obligation. According to Bolivia, the said obligation, which derives from “agreements, diplomatic practice and . . . declarations attributable to [Chile]” extending over more than a century, exists independently of the 1904 Peace Treaty. Accordingly, in Bolivia’s view, the matters in dispute in the present case are not matters settled or governed by the 1904 Peace Treaty, within the meaning of Article VI of the Pact of Bogotá, and the Court has jurisdiction to consider them under Article XXXI thereof.
The Court observes that, on its face, the Application presents a dispute about the existence of an obligation to negotiate sovereign access to the sea, and the alleged breach thereof. The Court considers that, while it may be assumed that sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean is, in the end, Bolivia’s goal, a distinction must be drawn between that goal and the related but distinct dispute presented by the Application, which does not ask the Court to adjudge and declare that Bolivia has a right to such access.
Translation - Spanish LA HAYA, 24 de septiembre de 2015.
1) Rechaza, por 14 votos contra 2, la objeción preliminar interpuesta por la República de Chile;
English to Spanish: Dilma Rousseff looks increasingly expected to be impeached General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English IT SMACKED of desperation. On Apr 14th—just a day before a reduce residence of Congress was due to start debating a probable impeachment of Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff—the attorney-general, José Eduardo Cardozo, petitioned a Supreme Court to hindrance proceedings. Ms Rousseff is indicted of regulating accounting cunning to censor a constant distance of a bill deficit. But, a supervision claimed, a elect that days progressing had endorsed promulgation her box to a Senate for hearing had counsel separate topics, so infringing her right to a correct defence. They enclosed allegations—unfounded, Ms Rousseff’s people protested—that she had attempted to meddle in a crime examine centred on Petrobras, a state-controlled oil company.
As expected, a probity chose not to second-guess a legislature. A infancy of justices saw a pierce for what it was: a taciturn acknowledgment that a supervision is doubtful to pattern a one-third of 513 deputies required to retard impeachment (the opinion is due on Apr 17th). Ms Rousseff “has mislaid a conditions to be president”, pronounced Gilmar Mendes, a probity member who has done no tip of his antithesis towards her. “For a bad player, even their possess legs can outing them up,” he scoffed.
Translation - Spanish APESTABA a desesperación.
