অনেক কাল আগে গ্রীস দেশে স্পার্থা শহরে এক রাজা ছিলেন। তার নাম তানীরজ। হেলেন নামে তার এক মেয়ে ছিল। হেলেন বড় খুবসুরত মেয়ে, একেবারে চাঁদের মতো। চুলগুলি মেঘের মতো কালো আর পা পর্যন্ত লম্বা। মেয়ের রূপের প্রশংসা সমস্ত গ্রিসে ছড়িয়ে পড়লো,–স্পার্থা শহর তো নয়, গ্রিস দেশে আর অমন সুন্দরী মেয়ে দ্বিতীয় ছিল না।
ক্রমে মেয়ে সেয়ানা হলেন। নানা দেশ থেকে রাজপুত্রেরা এসে হেলেনকে বিয়ে করবার জন্য রাজার কাছে দরবার করা শুরু করলেন। সকলেই রাজাকে বললেন–“কন্যাটি আমাকেই দিন; যদি না দেন তা হলে যাকে দেবেন; তার নিস্তার নেই, তাকে খুন করবো, কন্যার মা-বাবাকেও ছাড়বো না।”
রাজা একে বুড়ো তার উপর বড় দুর্বল। তিনি মহাবিপদে পড়লেন। শেষে এক মতলব এঁটে সব রাজপুত্রকে ডেকে একদিন বললেন, বাপু সকল, তোমরা এক কাজ করো, এতে তোমাদের সকলের পক্ষেই সুবিধা হবে। আমার মেয়েকে যদি বিয়ে করতে চাও, তা হলে তোমাদেরকে একরার করতে হবে। একরারটি হচ্ছে, যে হেলেনকে বিয়ে করবে তার কেউ ক্ষতি করতে পারবে না, কেউ ক্ষতি করতে এলে সকলে মিলে তাকে জব্দ করবে! সকলেই প্রতিজ্ঞা করলেন–হ্যাঁ, তাই হবে।
তারপর রাজা মেয়েকে বললেন, মা, এখন তুমি, জের পছন্দমতো বর খুঁজে নাও। মেয়ে এগামেমননের ভাই মেলাসকে স্বামীরূপে গ্রহণ করেন। এগামেমনন লোকটা কে তা জান? ইনি হচ্ছেন হেলেনের ভগ্নীপতি। এর সঙ্গে হেলেনের বড় বোনের বিয়ে হয়েছিল।
মেয়ের বিয়ের পর জামাইকে রাজ্য দিয়ে বুড়ো রাজা বিশ্রাম করতে লাগলেন।
গ্রিসের পূর্ব দিকে সমুদ্র পাড়ে এশিয়া মাইনরে ত্রয় বলে এক নগর ছিল। এখানকার রাজা ছিলেন প্রিয়াম। প্রিয়াম বড় জবরদস্ত রাজা–ঘর বাড়ি দালান কোঠা যে কত তার ছিল, তার ইয়ত্তা নেই। পেরিস বলে তার এক ছেলে হলে, রানী স্বপ্ন দেখলেন যেন শিশু পেরিস একটা জ্বালানো মশাল নিয়ে আকাশ থেকে নেমে এসেছে, সেই মশাল দিয়ে সারা। ত্রয় শহরে আগুন ধরিয়ে দিচ্ছে।
রানী স্বপ্ন দেখে ভীত হয়ে উঠলেন, রাজাও রানীর মুখে স্বপ্নের কথা শুনলেন। শুনে বললেন, এই ছেলে দেশে মহাবিপদ টেনে আনবে, অতএব একে মেরে ফেলাই ভালো। ছেলে কি না, গলা টিপে মেরে ফেলতে রাজা-রানীর বড় মায়া হল, শেষে রানী শিশুকে দূরে ইদা নামক পাহাড়ের জঙ্গলে রেখে এলেন।
খোদার মরজি! একটা গরিব মানুষ সেই পথ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলো। সে মেষ চরিয়ে খেতো। সে শুনতে পেলো, বনের মধ্যে যেন একটা শিশু মিহিসুরে পিপি করে কাঁদছে। একটু এগিয়ে লোকটা দেখলে, একটা সোনার বরণ শিশু কাঁটার মধ্যে পড়ে কাঁদছে। তার বড় মায়া হল, বুকে করে তুলে এনে সে শিশুকে মানুষ করতে লাগলো। গরিব মানুষটা শিশুর নাম রাখলো পেরিস। পেরিস ক্ৰমে বড় হতে লাগলেন। বেড়ে বেড়ে শেষে যুবক হয়ে উঠলেন। পেরিস যে রাজার ছেলে এ কথা তিনি বা কেউ জানলো না। তিনি আর কী করবেন?–পাহাড়ে মেষ চরাতেন আর বাঁশি বাজিয়ে গান করতেন। তাঁর শ্রী দেখে পাহাড়ের মাঝেকার একটা পরী তাকে ভালবাসতে লাগলো–এই পরীটার নাম ওনোন।
তোমরা পরীর কথা অনেকে শুনেছ, কেমন? একবার স্পার্থা নগরের কাছে এক যুবক এক পরীকে খাঁচায় আটক করে বললে, আমাকে যদি বিয়ে না কর তা হলে কিছুতেই তোমাকে ছাড়ছি নে। পরীটা আর কি করবে, শেষে রাজি হল। এমনটি আর কখনও হয় নি–পরীর সঙ্গে মানুষের বিয়ে! বিয়ের উৎসবে হাজার হাজার জিন-পরী এসে যোগ দিলেন। কত মানুষ এসে সভার আনন্দ বর্ধন করতে লাগলেন। খানা-মজলীশে কত মিঠাই, কত ছানা, কত দই, কত হালুয়া, কত পোলাও-কোর্মা সে আর কী বলবো।
পরীদের রাজার তিনটি মেয়েও সে সভায় এসেছিলেন। তাঁরা হচ্ছেন হেরা, এথেন এবং এফ্রোদাইত।
একটা শয়তান জিন, তার নাম এরিস, সে কেবল সকলের মাঝে ঝগড়া বাঁধিয়ে। বেড়াতো। তাকে কেউ ভালবাসতো না। তাকে এই উৎসবে দাওয়াত করা হয় নি বলে সে। মনে মনে ঠিক করলে, বেশ, মজা দেখাচ্ছি। সে রাজার তিনটি মেয়ের সামনে একটি সোনার আতা ফেলে দিল–আতায় লেখা ছিলো, যে সকলের চেয়ে দেখতে ভালো–সে-ই এই আতা পাবে। তিন বোনের প্রত্যেকেই আতা দাবি করলেন। শেষে রাজার তিন মেয়ের মধ্যে কে বেশি সুন্দরী এই নিয়ে মহাঝগড়া আর দলাদলি আরম্ভ হল। তিন বোনের বাপ ঝগড়া থামাবার জন্য বললেন, তোমরা ইদা পাহাড়ে রাজা প্রিয়ামের ছেলে পেরিসের কাছে যাও, সে যাকে অধিক সুন্দরী বলবে, তারই জয় হবে–সে-ই আতা পাবে।
এদিকে ইদা পাহাড়ে যুবক পেরিস গাছের ছায়ায় ঘুমোচ্ছিলেন।দূরে বনের আড়ালে পরী বলিকা ওনোন দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন। মেষগুলি নিঝরের পাশে একটার উপর আর একটা গা রেখে আরাম করছিল। এমন সময় হঠাৎ পেরিস চোখ খুলে দেখলেন, পরী রাজার তিনটি মেয়ে তাঁর সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছেন। সমস্ত বনভূমি তাঁদের আলোক-পুলকে পূর্ণ হয়ে উঠেছে।
প্রথমেই হেরা মুখ খুলে বললেন–দেখ, পেরিস, আমাদের মধ্যে কে বেশি সুন্দরী তাই তোমাকে বিচার করতে হবে, প্রামণস্বরূপ তাকে এই সোনার আতাটি দেবে। তুমি যে রাজা প্রিয়ামের ছেলে তা হয়তো জান না। আমি তোমাকে জগতের মধ্যে শ্রেষ্ঠরাজা করবো, পৃথিবীর সকল রাজা তোমার কাছে কৃপা ভিক্ষা করবে, অসংখ্য গাড়ি ঘোড়া হাতি সৈন্য তোমার হবে। হাজার হাজার সৈন্য, সেনাপতির মালিক হবে তুমি। শস্য ভরা মাঠ, কত গিরি, দুর্গ, কত মহিষ, গাভী, কত পাল দেওয়া জাহাজ তোমাকে দেবো; জীবনে তোমার সুখের অবধি থাকবে না। এখন যদি বুদ্ধিমান হও তবে আমাকে অসন্তুষ্ট করো না, সোনার আতাটি আমাকেই দাও।
এথেন বললেন–দেখ পেরিস, হেরার কথা শুনো না, আতাটি আমাকে দাও। আমি তোমাকে জগতের মধ্যে শ্রেষ্ঠ জ্ঞানী হবার সুবিধা করে দেব। তোমার পুণ্য জীবনের গৌরব পৃথিবীর সর্বত্র ছড়িয়ে পড়বে। ছার ঐশ্বর্যের লোভ করো না, সাধুর জীবনের তুলনায় রাজার। জীবনের কোনো মূল্য নেই।
ওনোন ফিস ফিস্ করে পেরিসের কানে বলতে যাচ্ছিল–এঁকেই আতাটি দাও–অমনি এফ্রোদাইত বললেন–আমাকে যদি সোনার আতাটি দাও তা হলে জগতের মধ্যে। শ্রেষ্ঠ সুন্দরী মেয়ে তোমাকে ভালবাসবে। সকলের কথাই তুমি শুনেছ, এখন যা ইচ্ছে কর।
পেরিস এফ্রোদাইতকে আতাটি দিলেন। তার পর পরীরা চলে গেলেন।
পেরিস যখন বুঝতে পারলেন তিনি রাজার ছেলে, তখন আর তার সে জায়গা ভালো লাগলো না। পরী বালিকা ওনোনকে তিনি ভুলে গেলেন। একেবারে রাজা প্রিয়ামের কাছে। এসে পেরিস নিজের পরিচয় দিলেন। হাজার হলেও ছেলে–রাজা রানী সন্তানকে বুকে তুলে নিলেন। তার পর সুখে দিন কাটাতে লাগলো, কিন্তু একটা চিন্তা পেরিসকে কষ্ট দিতে থাকলো–কি করে তিনি সেই সুন্দরী কন্যাটিকে খুঁজে বের করবেন। একদিন পেরিস বাপের কাছে বললেন–বাপজান, নানা দেশ ও নগর দেখবার সাধ আমার হয়েছে। আমি জাহাজে চড়ে দেশ ভ্রমণে যাব। কন্যা খুঁজতে বের হওয়াই তার আসল ইচ্ছা। অবিলম্বে রাজার হুকুমে বড় বড় জাহাজ তৈরি হতে লাগলো।
জাহাজ তৈরি হলে পেরিস যাত্রা করবেন, এমন সময় তার ভাই ও বোন বাধা দিয়ে বললেন–ভাইজান, দেশ দেখা দিয়ে কাজ নেই, আমাদের মনে হচ্ছে তোমার এই যাত্রা অনেক অশুভের কারণ হবে। অতএব এই মন্দ কাজ করো না। পেরিস হেসে বললেন তোমরা পাগল!
তার পর একদিন বড় বড় জাহাজে পাল খাঁটিয়ে মহা আড়ম্বরে এজিয়ন সাগরের বুকের উপর পেরিস জাহাজ ভাসিয়ে দিলেন। কত দ্বীপ, কত নীল জল অতিক্রম করে পেরিস স্পার্থার রাজা মেনেলাসের রাজ্যে এসে উপস্থিত হলেন। অতিথিকে অভ্যর্থনা করে বাড়িতে আনবার জন্যে রাজা মেনেলাস পত্নী ও পরিজনসহ পেরিসের জাহাজের কাছে এসে বললেন–আসুন যুবরাজ, আমাদের। বাড়িতে দুটি নুন-ভাত খাবেন। পেরিস খুব খুশি হয়ে মেনেলাসের সঙ্গে তাঁর বাড়িতে এলেন। অতিথির আদর-আপ্যায়নের জন্য মেনেলাসের প্রাসাদে দিবা-রাত্রি পান-ভোজন চলতে লাগলো। রানী হেলেন নিজ হস্তে সকলের পরিবেশন করতে লাগলেন।
পেরিস দেখলে রানী হেলেনের মতো সুন্দরী ত্রিভুবনে আর নেই। ভাবলেন, এই তো সেই কনে, যার কথা এফ্রোদাইত বলেছিলেন, কিন্তু কী করে একে হাত করা যায়? হেলেন যে আর এক জনের পত্নী। কয়েকদিনের জন্যে মেনেলাস অতিথিকে রানীর কাছে রেখে ক্রেতা দ্বীপে একটু বেড়াতে গেলেন। ব্যস, সুযোগ পেয়ে পেরিস রানীকে বললেন–রানী, আমার সঙ্গে চল, ত্রয় নগরে তোমাকে নিয়ে যাই। বিশ্বাসঘাতক রানী বললেন–বেশ চল।
রাজার অনুপস্থিতিতে রানীকে নিয়ে পেরিস ত্রয় নগর অভিমুখে যাত্রা করলেন।

০২. ঈদা পাহাড়ের যুবরাজ পেরিস
সেই যে ঈদা পাহাড়ের যুবরাজ পেরিস পরী এথেন ও হেরার কথা শুনলেন না–ফুটফুটে বৌকে পাবার লোভে তাঁর মতিভ্রম হল–এতে এথেন ও হেরার বড় রাগ হল।
এইবার হেরা ঝগড়ার ঠাকুর এরিসকে দিয়ে দ্রুত মেনেলাসের কাছে সংবাদ পাঠিয়ে দিলেন–দুষ্ট পেরিস তার বৌকে নিয়ে পালিয়েছে, শিগগির বাড়ি এসে যা হয় ব্যবস্থা করুন।
মেনেলাস এই দারুণ সংবাদ পেয়ে শোকে অস্থির হলেন। অতিথির বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা। স্মরণ করে সংসারকে নিতান্ত খারাপ স্থান বলে তাঁর মনে হতে লাগলো। অবিলম্বে বাড়ি ফিরে এসে দেখলেন–ঘর-দোর দালান-কোঠা সব খালি। পত্নী হেলেন নাই।
কি যে ব্যথা তাঁর মনকে কাঁদিয়ে তুললে তা আর বলে কী হবে? আহা, তাঁর জীবনের সঙ্গিনী কী করে তাকে ফেলে চলে গেল? মেনেলাস ভাবলেন–এ সংসারে আমার কেউ নেই। বৃথা আমার টাকা-কড়ি।
দুঃখের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তাঁর মনে খুব ক্রোধ হল। দারুণ উত্তেজনায় তাঁর চোখ রক্তময় হল–শরীরের প্রত্যেক পেশী ভীষণ প্রতিশোধের জন্য গরম হয়ে উঠলো। কোথায় সেই নেমকহারাম, শয়তান পেরিস–সে যে বহু দূরে–সেই অকূল সাগরের পারে।
হোক সাগরের পারে। তাঁকে বিনাশ করে হেলেনকে ফিরিয়ে আনতে হবে। যে শয়তান তার বুকে এমনি করে আগুন জ্বেলেছে তার কলিজার রক্ত দিয়ে স্নান করতে হবে।
রাগে দুঃখে মেনেলাস যেন পাগল হয় উঠলেন। তোমরা কি মেনেলাসের মনের অবস্থাটা ঠিক বুঝতে পাচ্ছ?
কত সুখ, কত প্রেমে মেনেলাস হেলেনের সঙ্গে এতকাল বাস করেছেন! এতটুকু অবিশ্বাস তার মনে কোনোদিন আসে নি। এই কঠিন বেদনা–এই নিষ্ঠুর আঘাতই যদি স্বামীকে দেবে, তবে ওগো হেলেন, কেন মিথ্যা-প্রণয়ে মেনেলাসকে আপন করেছিলে?
মেনেলাস মহিসেন নগরে যেয়ে তাঁর ভাই এগামেমননকে সব কথা বলে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন–এখন কী করি?
এগামেমনন ভাইয়ের দুঃখে যার পর নাই মর্মাহত হয়ে বললেন–দুষ্ট পেরিস সহজে হেলেনকে ফিরিয়ে দেবে না। এগামেমননের কাছে বীর নেস্তর ছিলেন। পেরিসের কুকাজের কথা সমস্ত শুনে বললেন–সমস্ত গ্রিসবাসীকে এই কুকাজের প্রতিশোধের জন্য লড়াই করতে হবে। এগামেমনন জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন–কেমন করে তা সম্ভব বলুন। আপনি জ্ঞানী। আপনার সুপরামর্শ ছাড়া আমরা কিছু বুঝতে পাচ্ছি না।
নেস্তর বললেন–আমাদের সকলের মুরুব্বি পালমিদাসের কাছে চলুন। তারপর গ্রিসের যে রাজপুত্র, রাজা নীরজের কাছে শপথ করেছিল তাদের কছে যাবো। মেনেলাসের এই বিপদে তাকে সাহায্য করতে তারা বাধ্য। পরী হেরা ও এথেন রাজপুত্র পেরিসের উপর খুব বিরক্ত হয়েছিলেন–তাঁরা এখন সারা গ্রিসের ভিত পরিসের বিরুদ্ধে একটা উত্তেজনা সৃষ্টি করতে লাগলেন।
গ্রিস ক্ষেপে উঠল। পেরিসের দেশ, ত্রয় নগর, পুড়িয়ে ছাই করে হেলেনকে উদ্ধার করতে হবে, এই হল তাদের প্রতিজ্ঞা। যে কথা সেই কাজ। হাজার হাজার জাহাজ সমুদ্রকূলে জমা হল। লক্ষ লক্ষ বীর যুবক যুদ্ধসজ্জায় বন্দরে এসে উপস্থিত হল।
প্রতিশোধের একটা বিরাট বিপুল আয়োজন দেখে এহগামেমননের মন গর্বে পূর্ণ হয়ে উঠলো। পেরিসের পরাজয়ের কথা চিন্তা করে তাঁর মনে গভীর আনন্দ হল।
বীরবর ওদেসিজ প্রথমে এই যাত্রায় যোগ দেন নি। বিয়ের পরই যুদ্ধে যাবার ডাক পড়ল কি না নববধূকে ছেড়ে যেতে তার মন সরছিল না। যেন পাগল হয়েছেন, এই ভান করে তিনি সমুদ্রকূলে যেয়ে লাঙ্গল চাষ আরম্ভ করলেন–কিন্তু তাঁর এই চালাকি জ্ঞানবৃদ্ধ পালমিদাস বুঝতে পারলেন। জব্দ করবার জন্য তিনি ওদেসিজের খোকা তেলিমেকাকে নিয়ে লাঙ্গলের সামনে ফেলে দিলেন, ওদেসিজ অমনি লাঙ্গল থামিয়ে ফেললেন। পাগলের কি জ্ঞান থাকে?–পালমিদাস হেসে ওদেসিজকে বললেন–দাদা, তোমার চালাকি বুঝতে পেরেছি-যুদ্ধে তোমাকে যেতেই হবে। ওদেসিজ শেষে যুদ্ধে যেতে বাধ্য হলেন। কিন্তু তাঁর মনে বড় রাগ হল। পরে এইজন্যে ওদেসিজ পালমিদাসকে খুব জব্দ করেছিল।
তোমাদের মনে আছে–রাজা পেলাস পরী-কুমারীকে বিয়ে করেছিলেন। এর নাম তিতিশা। পরে দেখবে, এই বিয়ে হতেই এই কাহিনীর সব অনর্থ শুরু হয়েছে। যাই হোক, এঁদের এক ছেলে হয়েছিল–তাকে সবাই নাম দিয়েছিলেন এচিলীস (খরগোস)। এচিলীস ভারি তুখোড় ছেলে–পরীর বাচ্চা কি না! দৌড়াতে, ঘোড়ায় চড়তে, তীর ছুঁড়তে, লেখা পড়ায় সকল দিক দিয়েই শ্রেষ্ঠ। চোহারাও অতি সুন্দর। তাই এই তামাসার নাম। এখন এচিলীসকেও যুদ্ধে যেতে হচ্ছে। ছেলে জন্মাবার পরই পণ্ডিত এনে মা তার কপাল গুনেছিলেন। তারা গুনে বলেছিলেন–এই ছেলের যশে পৃথিবী ভরে উঠবে, কিন্তু যুবক বয়সেই তাকে মৃত্যুবরণ করতে হবে। মা এই কথা শুনে মনে করে ছেলেকে কিছুতেই যুদ্ধে পাঠাতে ইচ্ছা কচ্ছিলেন না। কিন্তু দেশের লোকের কথা তো না করা যায় না। তাই তিনি গোপনে এচিলীসকে বহু দূরে–এক রাজার বাড়িতে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন।
এই রাজার কয়েকটি মেয়ে ছিল। কী করে এচিলীসকে গোপন করে রাখা যায়, এই চিন্তায় তিনি অনেকটা বিব্রত হয়ে উঠলেন। শেষে এক অভিনব কৌশল অবলম্বন করলেন। রাজার সাত মেয়ে ছিল, তিনি এচিলীসকে বালিকার পোশাক পরিয়ে তাদের সঙ্গে রাখলেন। কেউ বুঝতে পারলো না। এচিলীস মেয়ে-মানুষের পোশাকে এখানে লুকিয়ে আছে।
রাজার সেজো মেয়ে যেমন পরীর মতো খুবসুরত তেমনি সৎস্বভাব। এচিলীস তারই সঙ্গে বেশি করে মিশতেন। তার মিষ্টি কথা, তার সরল ব্যবহার এচিলীসেকে মুগ্ধ করে দিলো–তিনি তাকে বড় ভালবাসলেন। তাঁর জীবনের লক্ষ্যের কথা, দেশের কথা সব ভুলে গেলেন। একটা রঙ্গিন স্বপ্নে তাঁর দিনগুলি সুখে কেটে যেতে লাগলো।
একদিন হঠাৎ এক বিদেশী কতকগুলি পণ্যদ্রব্য এনে রাজপ্রাসাদে ঢুকলো। কত রং বেরং-এর কাপড়, কত বিচিত্র পোশাক-পরিচ্ছদ তাঁর ঝাঁকার মধ্যে স্তরে স্তরে সাজান ছিল। মেয়েরা ঘিরে সেই সব জিনিসপত্র দেখতে লাগলো। এচিলীসও নারীবেশে মেয়েদের মাঝে দাঁড়িয়ে সেই ঝাঁকার দিকে তাকিয়েছিলেন। তিনি নারীর পোশাক পরলেও অন্তরে তাঁর পুরুষের তেজ ঘুমিয়েছিল। মেয়েরা সুদৃশ্য হার, গয়না
আর জরির পোশাক নাড়া-চাড়া করছিলেন–এচিলীস সে সব ফেলে একখানা তলোয়ার তুলে তার ধার পরীক্ষা করতে লাগলেন। ব্যস! আর যাবেন কোথায়? যাকে তোমরা সওদাগর বলে মনে করছ, ইনি হচ্ছেন গ্রিসের বড় বীর ওদেসীজ। মিথ্যা সাজে এচিলীসের খোঁজে বের হয়েছেন। ওদেসীজ এচিলীসের হাত ধরে বললেন–তোমাকে চিনেছি। এখন নারীর পোশাক রেখে তীর তলোয়ার হাতে করে বেরিয়ে পড়। সমস্ত গ্রিসের বীর যুদ্ধের জন্য রওয়ানা হচ্ছে আর তুমি এইখানে মেয়ে-মানুষের পোশাক পরে লুকিয়ে আছ?
যথা সময়ে হাজার হাজার বীর ত্রয় দেশের দিকে যাত্রা করলেন। সে কী দৃশ্য! অগণিত তীর, তলোয়ারের আস্ফালন, সহস্র মুখের মিলিত ধ্বনি। এগামেমননের মনে তা দেখে অহঙ্কার হল, তাঁর মনে হল তিনি যেন সমস্ত দুনিয়া জয় করতে পারবেন। গর্বে খোদার নামটি পর্যন্ত ভুলে গেলেন–অহঙ্কার করে আল্লাহকে উপহাস করে কথা বলতে লাগলেন।
একদিন গভীর রাত্রে সমুদ্রবক্ষে নাবিকেরা দিগৃহারা হয়ে গেল–এত করে তারা ঠিক পথে জাহাজ চালাতে চেষ্টা করলো, কিন্তু সব চেষ্টা বৃথা হল। সাত দিন সাত রাত্রি তারা কিছুই ঠিক করতে না পেরে শেষে সমুদ্রকূলের এক পাহাড়ের কাছে এসে উপস্থিত হল। সেই পাহাড়ে ভীষণ জঙ্গল ছিল। বীরগণ ভাবতে লাগলেন–কোথায় হয় নগরে যুদ্ধ করে গৌরব অর্জন করবো, তানা, কোথায় পথ ভুলে এসে উপস্থিত হলাম। এখন উপায় কী?
জাহাজ খুলে পুনরায় পথের সন্ধানে যে তারা বের হবেন সে সুবিধা হল না, কারণ উল্টো দিক থেকে এমন প্রবলভাবে বাতাস বইতে লাগলো যে, কার সাধ্য জাহাজ এক রশি চালায়। তার পর তারা একমনে আল্লাহকে ডাকতে লাগলেন।
একদিন ওদেসিজ স্বপ্ন দেখলেন–এক ব্যক্তি তাঁকে বলছেন, এগামেমননের পাপে তোমাদের সকলকে শাস্তি ভোগ করতে হচ্ছে। এগামেমনন বড় অহঙ্কারের পরিচয় দিয়েছে এবং সেই কারণে তোমাদের মাথায় এই অভিশাপ পড়েছে। জান তো, খোদা অহঙ্কার ভালবাসেন না। ওদেসিজ সেই স্বপ্নপুরুষকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন–তা হলে এই অভিশাপ হতে কী করে মুক্ত হই? দয়া করে বলে দিন। সেই পুরুষ বললেন–মুক্তির পথ আছে। সে কাজ কি করতে পারবে? ওদেসিজ বললেন-পারবো, নিশ্চয় পারবো।
স্বপ্ন পুরুষ–তোমাদের মুক্তির পথ বলে দেবার জন্যেই আজ আমি এখানে এসেছি। আমার দেরি করার যো নেই। শোন, এগামেমননের কুমারী কন্যাকে যদি কোরবানি দিতে পার, তা হলেই তোমরা মুক্তি পাবে, নইলে নয়। এই কথা বলেই স্বপ্ন পুরুষ অদৃশ্য হলেন।
প্রাতঃকালে উঠে ওদেসিজ বন্ধু ও দলপতিগণকে সব বৃত্তান্ত বললেন। সকলেই স্বপ্ন পুরুষের কথা বিশ্বাস করেন। সকলে দল বেঁধে এগামেমননের কাছে যেয়ে বললেন–তোমার মেয়েকে কোরবানি দিয়ে আমাদের উদ্ধার করো। গত রাত্রে এক মহাপুরুষ স্বপ্নে ওদেসিজকে বলে গেছেন তোমার কুমারী কন্যার জীবন দানের উপর শুধু আমাদের নয়, জাতির সম্মান নির্ভর করছে। এগামেমনন একবার মুখ তুলে দলপতির রক্তচক্ষুর পানে তাকালেন। তাঁদের মুখে কঠিন ইচ্ছার ছায়া দেখে এগামেমননের মনে ভয় হল।
এগামেমননকে চুপ করে থাকতে দেখে তাঁরা রেগে বললেন–কাপুরুষ, জাতির সম্মানের জন্য, খোদার উদ্দেশ্যের পথে কন্যার হৃদয়রক্ত দান করতে সঙ্কোচ বোধ করছো? গ্রিক জাতির মুখে কালি দিয়ে, লক্ষ নর-নারীর মাথা অপমানে নত করে তুমি তোমার কন্যাকে বাঁচাবে? এই তোমার বীর জীবনের ইচ্ছা? বল, তোমার ইচ্ছা কী? এগামেমনন মৃদু কণ্ঠে বললেন–রাজি আছি।
এগামেমননের পত্নীর কাছে লোক গেল। কন্যাকে কোরবানি করা হবে, এ কথা না বলে, লোকটি বললে–বীরবর এচিলীসের সঙ্গে আপনার মেয়ের বিয়ে হবে। আপনার স্বামী অবিলম্বে মেয়েকে নিয়ে যেতে বলেছেন। মা মহাআনন্দে মেয়েকে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন।
মেয়ে এসে দেখলেন, বিয়ের কোনো উৎসব হচ্ছে না। বাঁশির গান, ফুলের মালা কিছুই নেই। কতকগুলি রাজা ছুরি হাতে করে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে।
যথাসময়ে তাকে সব কথা বলা হল–পিতার পাপের জন্য তাঁর জীবন নেওয়া হবে। কন্যা ভীত হলেন না। তিনি নির্ভীক চিত্তে ঘাতকের ছুরির মুখে গলা এগিয়ে দিলেন। সমুদ্রের নীল পানি চতুর্দিকে থই থই করছিল। একবার মেয়ে বাপের মুখের দিকে তাকালেন–তার পর বীরবালার মতো বললেন–চালাও। ছুরি উঠাতেই কোথা থেকে একটা ঝড় এসে মেয়েকে কোথায় উড়িয়ে নিয়ে গেল। খোদা তাকে বাঁচালেন,–খোদার ইচ্ছায় যে প্রাণ দিতে যায়, খোদা তাকে রক্ষা করেন।

Translation - English I: In the City of Sparta
A long time ago, in the city of Sparta, Greece, there was a king named Taniraj. He had a daughter named Helen. Helen was a very beautiful girl, as radiant as the moon. Her hair was as black as the clouds, and she was tall, with legs that reached all the way to her feet. The praise of her beauty spread across all of Greece – not only in the city of Sparta but throughout the country; there was no other girl as beautiful as Helen.
As time passed, the girl grew up. Princes from various countries began coming to the king to ask for her hand in marriage. They all said to the king, "Give us your daughter; if you do not, whoever you give her to will not escape alive, and we will kill him and his parents."
The king, being old and weak, was in a great dilemma. Finally, he devised a plan and called all the princes together one day. He said, "Listen, everyone, I have a proposal that will benefit all of you. If you want to marry my daughter, you must make a vow. The vow is that whoever marries Helen, no one will be able to harm him. If anyone tries to harm him, you will all join together and defeat him!" All the princes agreed, saying, "Yes, we will do so."
Then the king said to his daughter, "Now, choose the husband you like." Helen chose Agamemnon’s brother, Menelaus, to be her husband. Do you know who Agamemnon was? He was Helen’s brother-in-law. Agamemnon had married Helen’s elder sister. After the marriage, the old king gave the kingdom to his son-in-law and began to rest.
To the east of Greece, by the sea in Asia Minor, there was a city called Troy. The king of Troy was Priam, a mighty ruler. He had numerous homes, palaces, and buildings, beyond measure. Priam had a son named Paris. One day, the queen had a dream where the infant Paris descended from the sky holding a blazing torch, using it to set fire to the city of Troy.
Frightened by this dream, the queen told the king. Upon hearing it, the king said, "This child will bring great disaster to our country, so it is better to kill him." However, when the time came to act, they could not bring themselves to kill him, so the queen took the child and left him in the wilderness on the Ida Mountains.
By God’s will, a poor man who was tending his sheep passed by. He heard a baby crying softly in the woods. Approaching the sound, he found a golden-haired infant crying among the thorns. Moved by compassion, he took the child in his arms and began to raise him. The poor man named the child Paris. Paris grew up and, over time, became a young man. Neither he nor anyone else knew that he was the king’s son. He tended sheep and played the flute in the mountains. One day, a fairy named Oenone, who lived in the mountains, fell in love with him because of his charm.
You must have heard of fairies. Once, near the city of Sparta, a young man trapped a fairy in a cage and told her, "If you do not marry me, I will never let you out." The fairy, unable to escape, eventually agreed. It was a rare event—never before had a fairy married a human! At the wedding, thousands of fairies and genies joined the celebration. There was much food, sweets, curds, halva, pilaf, and other delicacies.
Three daughters of the king of fairies also attended the event. They were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
One evil genie named Eris, who thrived on creating quarrels, was not invited to the celebration. Feeling slighted, Eris decided to cause trouble. He threw a golden apple among the guests with the inscription, "To the fairest." Each of the three princesses claimed the apple. An argument broke out among them over who was the most beautiful. The king, seeking to stop the quarrel, said, "Go to Paris, the son of King Priam, in the Ida Mountains. He will judge who is the fairest, and whoever he chooses will receive the golden apple."
Meanwhile, Paris was sleeping in the shade of a tree on the Ida Mountains. Hidden behind the forest, the three princesses stood before him. The whole forest was filled with light from their radiance.
Hera spoke first, "Paris, you must judge who is the most beautiful among us. The one you choose will receive this golden apple. I will make you the greatest king in the world. All the other kings will seek your favor, and you will have countless soldiers, chariots, horses, and ships. You will live in luxury, and your happiness will never end. If you are wise, do not anger me and give the apple to me."
Athena spoke next, "Paris, do not listen to Hera. Give me the apple. I will make you the wisest person in the world. Your fame will spread everywhere, and you will be known as the most learned and virtuous king. Do not be tempted by wealth and power; a wise life is more valuable than a king’s life."
Oenone whispered in Paris’s ear, urging him to choose her. Aphrodite then said, "If you give me the apple, I will make the most beautiful woman in the world fall in love with you. You have heard all the offers. Now, choose what you wish." Paris gave the golden apple to Aphrodite. After that, the fairies departed.
When Paris learned he was the son of King Priam, he no longer felt comfortable in his humble home. He forgot about Oenone and went straight to his father’s kingdom. When Priam and his queen learned the truth, they joyfully embraced their son. Paris then lived happily in Troy, but one thought troubled him—how would he find the beautiful woman he had seen? One day, Paris told his father, "I wish to see other lands and cities. I will go on a sea journey." The true purpose was to search for the woman. At once, the king ordered the construction of large ships.
When the ships were ready, Paris set sail. His siblings tried to stop him, warning that this journey might bring bad luck, but he laughed at their concerns.
Paris set sail across the Aegean Sea, passing many islands and crossing blue waters, until he reached the kingdom of Menelaus, the king of Sparta. The king warmly welcomed him and invited him to his palace. Paris was delighted and accompanied Menelaus to his home. The feasting continued day and night in honor of the guest, and Queen Helen served them personally.
Paris was struck by Helen’s beauty—there was no one more beautiful in the three worlds. He realized that she was the woman Aphrodite had promised him. But how could he claim her, since she was already married? After a few days, Menelaus left to visit a neighboring island, leaving Paris with Helen. Seizing the opportunity, Paris whispered to Helen, "Come with me to Troy." The treacherous queen agreed.
While Menelaus was away, Paris took Helen and sailed toward Troy.

II : Prince Paris of Ida Mountain
Prince Paris of Ida Mountain, being enamored with the thought of acquiring a beautiful wife, didn’t listen to the fairy Athena and Hera. Even, the thought of acquiring a beautiful wife made him lose his mind, and it angered Athena and Hera greatly. At that time, Hera sent the god of quarrels, Eris, to deliver a message to Menelaus. "The wicked Paris has run away with your wife. Hurry back and take action."
Menelaus was devastated upon hearing this dreadful news. He felt betrayed by his guest. He began to think of his home as a horrible place, remembering the betrayal. He returned home immediately to find his palace empty. His wife, Helen, was gone. The pain in his heart was unimaginable. How could his life companion leave him like this? Menelaus thought to himself, "There is no one left in this world for me. All my wealth is in vain."
Along with his sorrow, a fierce anger began to rise. His eyes turned bloodshot with rage, and his muscles tensed with a burning desire for revenge. He thought of Paris, who was far away, on the other side of the sea. But that did not matter; Paris must be destroyed, and Helen must be brought back. The villain who had ignited such a fire in his heart would have to pay with his blood. In his grief and rage, Menelaus seemed to go mad. Do you understand what was going through Menelaus’s mind?
He had lived in happiness and love with Helen for so long. He had never once doubted her. But now, this terrible pain—this cruel betrayal—if this is what a husband has to endure, then Helen, why did you deceive Menelaus with false love? Menelaus went to Mycenae to seek counsel from his brother, Agamemnon. He told him everything and asked, "What should I do now?"
Agamemnon was deeply saddened by his brother’s suffering. He said, "The wicked Paris will not give Helen up easily." Nestor, the wise elder, was consulted, and he listened to the whole story of Paris’s misdeeds. He said, "All of Greece must unite to avenge this crime. We must fight for this cause." Agamemnon then asked, "How can we make that happen? You are wise, and without your counsel, we understand nothing."
Nestor said, "Let us go to our elder Palamedes. We will take an oath to avenge the wrongs committed by Paris." The goddesses Hera and Athena, who were greatly displeased with Paris, began to stir up anger throughout Greece. A call for action against Paris spread across the land.
Greece was in an uproar. Their vow was clear: to burn down Paris’s kingdom, Troy, and rescue Helen. The plan was set into motion. Thousands of ships gathered at the coast, and countless brave warriors arrived, ready for battle. Seeing the grand preparations for revenge, Agamemnon’s heart swelled with pride. He felt joy imagining Paris’s inevitable defeat. The great hero Odysseus initially did not want to join the campaign. He had just married and could not bear the thought of leaving his new bride. Acting as if he had gone mad, he pretended to plow the field by the seashore. But Palamedes, who was wise, soon figured out his trick. To catch him, Palamedes threw Odysseus’s infant son, Telemachus, in front of the plow. Odysseus stopped plowing immediately. "Does a madman have wisdom?" Palamedes laughed and said, "I know your trick, Odysseus. You must go to war." Reluctantly, Odysseus finally joined the fight, but with great anger in his heart. Later, he would take out his frustration on Palamedes.
Do you remember the story of King Peleus who married the fairy? Her name was Thetis. This marriage would be the beginning of all the misfortunes to come. They had a son, named Achilles (the tortoise). Achilles was a remarkable child, skilled in running, horseback riding, archery, and all other arts, including reading and writing. He was also very handsome. This tale now centers around Achilles, who must also go to war. After his birth, wise men came to predict his fate. They said, "This boy will bring glory to the world, but he will die young." His mother, hearing this, was reluctant to send him to war. But the people of the country would not allow her to refuse. So, she secretly sent Achilles to a distant king’s palace to hide him. This king had several daughters. The mother, troubled by how to keep Achilles hidden, devised an ingenious plan. She disguised Achilles in women’s clothing and placed him among the king’s daughters. No one suspected him to be a boy in disguise.
The king’s second daughter was as beautiful as a fairy and had a kind nature. Achilles became very close to her, charmed by her sweet words and simple demeanor. He fell deeply in love with her, forgetting his life’s mission and his country’s cause. His days passed happily like a colorful dream.
One day, a foreign trader arrived at the palace with a cart full of exotic goods: colorful clothes and jewelry. The girls gathered around to admire these treasures. Achilles, disguised as a woman, stood among them, observing the goods. Although he wore women’s clothing, his warrior spirit was still alive. While the girls were handling jewelry and fine garments, Achilles discarded them and picked up a sword to test its edge. Suddenly, the disguise was revealed—he was the great warrior, Odysseus, who had come in search of Achilles. Odysseus grabbed Achilles by the hand and said, "I know who you are. Now take off the woman’s clothes and arm yourself with bow and sword. All the heroes of Greece are setting out for battle, and you are here hiding in women’s garments?"
Soon after, thousands of warriors set sail towards Troy. The sight was magnificent: countless arrows, the flash of swords, and the roar of warriors. Agamemnon, watching this, was filled with pride, thinking he could conquer the whole world. But his arrogance led him to mock God.
One night, the sailors lost their way on the sea. Despite their best efforts, they could not find their course. After seven days and nights, they finally arrived at a mountain with a dense forest. The warriors wondered where they had gone astray, and now, how could they find their way? As they tried to set out again, a strong wind blew against them, making it impossible to sail. So, they turned to God for help.
One night, Odysseus had a dream. A man appeared to him in the dream, saying, "You are suffering because of Agamemnon’s pride. Know that God does not like arrogance." Odysseus asked, "How can we be freed from this curse?" The man replied, "There is a way. If you can offer Agamemnon’s daughter as a sacrifice, you will be freed from this curse." And with that, the dream figure vanished.
The next morning, Odysseus shared his dream with his companions, and they all believed it. Together, they went to Agamemnon and said, "You must sacrifice your daughter to free us from this curse." Agamemnon, looking at the determined faces of his warriors, was filled with fear.
They said to him, "Coward, how can you hesitate to sacrifice your daughter for the honor of our nation? Are you willing to dishonor the Greek people and save your own daughter?" Agamemnon, in a soft voice, replied, "I agree."
The messenger was sent to Agamemnon’s wife, who was told that her daughter would marry Achilles. She was told not that her daughter would be sacrificed. Overjoyed, she sent her daughter to Agamemnon.
When the daughter arrived, there were no wedding celebrations. No music, no flowers, just a group of kings standing with swords.
When she was told the truth—her life was to be sacrificed for her father’s sin—she did not fear. With a fearless heart, she walked up to the executioner’s sword. The blue sea churned all around them. She looked once at her father’s face and then boldly said, "Strike." As the sword was raised, a storm suddenly swept in and carried the girl away. God saved her, for those who are willing to die in God’s name are protected by Him.

Source text - English I. THE RIGHT TO BE RICH
No matter how much people praise poverty, the truth is that you can’t live a full and successful life without money. You need money to grow and reach your full potential—mentally, spiritually, and physically—because growing as a person requires access to things, and things cost money.
Society is built in a way that you need money to get the resources that help you develop. So, learning how to become rich is the foundation for personal progress. The purpose of life is growth. Every living being has the right to grow as much as they can. For humans, this means having the freedom to access everything needed to fully develop the body, mind, and soul. In other words, we have a right to be rich.
In this book, when I talk about being rich, I mean actually having money—not just being satisfied with a little. If you’re capable of having and enjoying more, you shouldn’t settle for less. Nature wants us to grow and thrive, so being content with too little goes against that purpose.
A rich person is someone who has everything they need to live the life they are capable of living. And in today’s world, even living a basic but full life requires a lot of money. It’s natural for people to want to become their best selves, and that can only happen by using the resources money provides.
That’s why understanding how to get rich is one of the most important things you can learn. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be rich. In fact, the desire for wealth is simply the desire for a fuller, better life—and that’s a good thing. If someone doesn’t want to live more fully and abundantly, something is off.
We live for three things: our body, our mind, and our soul. None of these is more important than the others—they all matter equally. You can’t live fully if any part of you is being neglected. Living only for the soul, or only for the mind, while ignoring your body, is not right.
We all know the consequences of living only for the body while ignoring the mind and soul. True life means expressing all parts of who you are—body, mind, and soul. Nobody can be truly happy unless all parts of themselves are fully alive and active.
If any potential in you goes unused, you’ll feel unfulfilled. That’s because desire is your inner potential trying to express itself.
To live fully in your body, you need good food, proper clothing, a safe and comfortable place to live, and time to rest and relax.
To live fully in your mind, you need books, time to study, the chance to travel and learn, and to be around people who challenge and inspire you. You also need beauty, art, and interesting experiences.
To live fully in your soul, you need love. But poverty makes it hard to express love. One of the deepest joys in life is giving to the people you love. If you don’t have anything to give, it’s hard to fully play your role as a parent, partner, citizen, or even as a person.
It’s through using material things that we develop our body, grow our mind, and express our soul. That’s why it’s so important to become rich.
It is completely normal and right for you to want to be rich. If you’re a healthy, well-balanced person, you will want to be. And it’s absolutely right to focus on learning how to get rich. It’s not just important—it’s your duty to yourself, to God, and to others. Because the best way to serve the world is to become the best version of yourself.

II. THERE IS A SCIENCE OF GETTING RICH
Getting rich isn’t just luck or guesswork—it’s a science. Like math, it follows specific laws. If you understand and follow these laws, you can become rich with the same certainty as solving an equation.
Wealth comes from doing things in a specific, consistent way. People who do things this way—whether they realize it or not—end up wealthy. Those who don’t, no matter how hard they work or how smart they are, usually stay poor.
It’s a basic law of nature: the same actions always produce the same results. So, if anyone learns how to do things in this specific way, they will become rich.
Let’s look at the evidence. Wealth isn’t just about where you live. If it were, everyone in certain cities or neighborhoods would be rich, and everyone elsewhere would be poor. But that’s not what we see. Rich and poor people live in the same places, even do the same kinds of work. So clearly, it’s not just about environment.
It’s also not about talent. Many talented people remain poor, while others with average or even below-average skills become wealthy. That means success doesn’t depend only on how smart, creative, or hardworking you are.
Likewise, getting rich isn’t about saving money or being super thrifty. Some of the stingiest people stay poor, while others who spend freely build wealth. Even people in the same profession—doing similar things—can have very different results. One becomes rich, and the other does not. This again shows that it’s not about what you do, but how you do it. So we can conclude: wealth comes from doing things in a certain way—a way that follows specific principles.
You might wonder if this “Certain Way” is too hard for most people. But that’s not the case. Rich people come from all walks of life: some are smart, some aren’t; some are strong, some are weak; some are well-educated, some aren’t. As long as you can read and understand this, you have what it takes.
And remember, it’s not just about where you are. Of course, you can’t run a business in the middle of the desert. But if others in your area can succeed, so can you.
You also don’t have to pick a specific job or industry. People get rich in all kinds of work, while others in the same fields stay broke. That said, you’ll do best in a business you enjoy and that suits your skills and location. But the real key is doing things in that Certain Way—not picking the “right” job.
You don’t need to start with a lot of money either. It’s true that having capital helps you grow faster, but if you do things in the right way, you’ll start attracting capital even if you begin with nothing.
You could be completely broke, in debt, and have no connections at all—but if you start doing things in this Certain Way, you will begin moving toward wealth. Step by step, you’ll build capital, move into the right business, or relocate if needed. All of that starts with doing things the right way where you are now.

III. IS OPPORTUNITY MONOPOLIZED?
No one is stuck in poverty because someone else has taken all the opportunities. Wealth isn’t locked away behind gates only the rich can access. Yes, some industries may be dominated by big players—like major railroad companies—but there are always new opportunities emerging.
For example, while it’s tough to break into the steam railroad business now, electric railways are still growing, and air transportation will soon become a massive industry. These newer fields will need thousands, maybe millions, of workers, innovators, and business owners. Instead of competing in overcrowded markets, why not look toward these rising industries?
Let’s say you work in a factory, like a steel plant owned by a large corporation. Sure, it might seem impossible to own that business—but that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed elsewhere. For instance, you could leave and start your own small farm. Right now, there’s huge potential for people who work small plots of land and grow food in smart, efficient ways. You might think owning land is out of reach, but this book will show you that it’s not—you can get the land if you start doing things in a Certain Way.
Opportunities shift over time based on what society needs. In the U.S. right now, the greatest opportunity lies in farming and related industries—not in factory jobs. Farmers, those who serve them, and the businesses that supply them have more opportunity today than those who work with or for the industrial workforce. Poverty doesn’t exist because there isn’t enough to go around. There’s actually more than enough for everyone. For example, there are enough resources in the U.S. alone to build massive, luxurious homes for every family on Earth. The land could produce enough food and clothing to feed and clothe the entire population of the world in great abundance. The supply of resources we can see is massive, and the supply we can’t see—the raw material of the universe—is limitless.
Everything we see is made from one original substance, which takes different forms. New things are always being created from this “formless substance,” and old things dissolve back into it. But the source never runs out.

The formless substance isn’t just raw material—it’s intelligent and alive. It responds to life by creating more life. Its natural desire is to grow, to expand, and to express itself more fully. ধনী হওয়া শুধু ভাগ্য বা অনুমান নির্ভর নয়—এটি একটি বিজ্ঞান। গাণিতিক সূত্রের মতো, এটি নির্দিষ্ট নিয়মনীতি অনুসরণ করে। যদি আপনি এই নিয়মনীতি বুঝেন এবং অনুসরণ করেন, আপনি একটি সমীকরণ সমাধানের মতো সুনিশ্চিতভাবে ধনী হতে পারবেন।

I am a professional English–Bengali translator, editor, and proofreader with over 11 years of experience in translation, writing, and linguistic services.
