Translation - English “Manga”, which originated in Japan in the 1920s, carries a unique tradition. In a time when the Manga world was made up primarily of men, Eiko Hanamura was one of its pioneering female artists. Later, she became world renowned as a leading writer of comics for young girls. Manga’s origins lie in Ukiyo-e (Woodblock Painting) and within the Raphaelite School before the 19th century and since then this style of drawing has captivated people and grown tremendously around the world. Comics for young girls used a literary style found in manga, but it also created the “Kawaii” (cute) writing style that is widely used today. The source of the “Kawaii” style, Eiko’s colorful and timeless illustrations, have attracted much attention.
Let’s take a step back into the past. After being recommended to do so by her local book store, Eiko, the girl with an everlasting smile and positive attitude, began drawing comics. This was her first step into the Manga world. With the release of Murasaki no Yôsei (Violet Fairy) in 1959 and the publication in 1963 of Haru o Yobu Uta (The Song that Calls Spring) by the famous magazine, Nakayoshi, her career as a manga artist took off. Eiko’s artistic sensibilities, instilled in her as a young girl in wartime Japan, flourished, and her talent bloomed on the stage of girls’ comic magazines such as “Nakayoshi” and “The Weekly Margaret.” Eiko Hanamura helped start the trend of girls with stars in their eyes, drawn lower eyelashes, hair colored red, blue or green, and characters wearing clothing with original exotic designs.
Kiri no Naka no Shôjo (A Girl in the fog) has become a household name. This work, which related how a parent’s love influences a child’s life, was a groundbreaking hit and a revolutionary work in manga for young girls. This comic was the first to have a stylish character who sensitively depicted the insecurities of adolescence, and dominated a generation. In 1975 the Manga was a big hit after being made into a television drama with a span of 15 episodes. The lead character in the drama was played by a popular Japanese actress.
Eiko’s early work had to deal with many constraints due to editorial demands, however, rather than having regrets, she explained that it was exactly because of those limitations that she achieved her success. Currently, she is working on illustrating a variety of her favorite material, such as detective stories and literary novels, into comics. Moreover, she has taken on the ambitious task of adapting classical Japanese literary works into comics by a unique mode of expression that has evolved along with readers.
Eiko’s illustrations have also been featured on many designs including pictorial notes and stationaries. At that time many children would go wild about “Kikasekae to Nurie.” (Dress up and Coloring Books). Even now, Eiko Hanamura’s literary works overflow with a sense of fashion that isn’t bound by preconceived ideas.
These Kawaii illustrations were drawn in the 1960s and 1970s, but even today, it’s safe to say they’ve lost none of their appeal and are still brimming with charm.
