Source text - English The coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is viciously spreading through the continents with rapidly increasing mortality rates. Current management of COVID-19 is based on the premise that respiratory failure is the leading cause of mortality. However, mounting evidence links accelerated pathogenesis in gravely ill COVID-19 patients to a hyper-inflammatory state involving a cytokine storm. Several components of the heightened inflammatory state were addressed as therapeutic targets. Another key component of the heightened inflammatory state is hyper-ferritinemia which reportedly identifies patients with increased mortality risk. In spite of its strong association with mortality, it is not yet clear if hyper-ferritinemia in COVID-19 patients is merely a systemic marker of disease progression, or a key modulator in disease pathogenesis. Here we address implications of a possible role for hyper- ferritinemia, and altered iron homeostasis in COVID-19 pathogenesis, and potential therapeutic targets in this regard.

На данный момент лечение COVID-19 основывается на предположении, что смертность вызывается в первую очередь дыхательной недостаточностью. Тем не менее, имеются растущие доказательства того, что ускоренный патогенез COVID-19 у тяжелобольных пациентов связан с гипервоспалением, включающем цитокиновый шторм. Некоторые компоненты гипервоспалительного процесса использовались как цели для терапии. Гиперферритинемия является ещё одним ключевым фактором при гипервоспалении, и согласно имеющейся информации отличает пациентов с повышенным риском смертности. Пока неизвестно, является ли гиперферритинемия у пациентов COVID-19 просто системным показателем развития болезни, или же ключевым модулятором её патогенеза. В данной статье мы обсуждаем возможную роль гиперферритинемии и измененного гомеостаза железа в развитии патогенеза COVID-19, а также возможные терапевтические цели в этом аспекте.

Languages, together with science, have always been a big love of my life. To this day, I consider a language course an amazing birthday gift. Overall, I speak a total of 6 languages: Russian is my native, Hebrew is the bilingual/almost-second native, English is advanced/scientific professional due to my scientific career, Spanish is intermediate/advanced due to previous scientific work in Barcelona. I also speak intermediate French and basic Italian, having taken 4 years or a 1-year course, respectively.I have a unique combination of skills: language skills, broad and deep science expertise from 15+ years of research, writing, reading, proofreading, working with other people, managing projects and adhering to tight deadlines.
