My website and future home of the German language version of Wordfast(TM) CAT software by Champollion LTD. is due to launch 8 Feb 2003.
"bilingual" is a term defined in as many ways as there are speakers. Even the most polyglot professional will have a cultural and vocabulary bias towards a particular language on any given topic depending on her/his biography. As an American growing up in Germany, I have been engaged in both worlds independently all my life, serving as a link between the communities on all levels- privately, culturally and professionally. Bilingualism has little to do with whether or not one is a good translator. In fact, most psychological peculiarities of bilinguals affect areas others than language. However, my balanced language competence in both English and German allow me to produce quality native-level translations in both directions.
My recent work experience includes:
- Director/Producer for "ManiActs" English Theatre Company, Freiburg, Germany
- In-house Translator/Proofreader at the Institute of Computer Science and Social Studies, Freiburg, Germany
- German Culture Coordinator for the Lacombe Heritage Center, Lacombe, LA
- CAT Trainer at 'Englisches Institut Heidelberg'
In addition, I have 10 years of freelance translation experience with both German->English AND English-> German. Translation is not merely my passion, it's literally my life.
I am fully ATA accredited. (Member # 229587)
On translating technical manuals, I work with dedication to detail and adhere strictly to established vocabulary.
If you need website translations: I can handle not only textbodies (using Trados Tag-Editor) but also graphic elements such as buttons, image maps, flash animations etc.
My bilingual talents are best exploited wherever it is vital to fully grasp the scope of a given source text's register, connotations & mindframe. These areas include Literature, Advertising, Humanities, Personal correspondence and the like. I can creatively find target equivalents that are more accurate renditions than strict literal translations could hope to be.
Workplace environment at the Centre for Cognitive Science has trained me to work with speed and precision under time pressure. I have a record of staying ahead of even the tightest deadlines.
