English to Spanish: Dominican Republic & the Jewish Settlers
Source text - English In 1938, when openings for Jewish refugees were hard to find, the Dominican Republic offered to resettle 100,000 Jews. Sosúa, an abandoned plantation, would become a refuge to hundreds of Jews, and grow into a town that still thrives today. This exhibition tells how the settlers were recruited, what awaited them in Sosúa, and how they worked with their Dominican neighbors to establish the settlement. Sosúa speaks poignantly to one chapter in a shared Dominican and Jewish story.
Translation - Spanish En 1938 cuando era muy difícil encontrar oportunidades para los refugiados judíos, la República Dominicana se ofreció para reacomodar a 100.000 judíos. Sosúa, una plantación abandonada, se convertiría en el refugio de cientos de judíos y crecería hasta ser la ciudad próspera de estos días. La exhibición relata como los colonos fueron aceptados, lo que les esperaba en Sosúa y cómo trabajaron junto a sus vecinos dominicanos para establecer la colonia. Sosúa es la desgarradora voz de un capítulo de la historia conjunta de dominicanos y judíos.
