Source text - Italian Superati i 51 anni, il pensiero scansa la stanchezza e si rifugia nei sogni di 30 anni or sono, tornando al giorno in cui raggiunsi la maggior età. Quel giorno mi dissi che avrei viaggiato in tutti quei luoghi esotici e lontani che mi attiravano con promesse di appagamento di ogni specie.
E di viaggi ne ho fatti, ma raramente quelli che avrei sperato. Solo adesso, entrando nel secondo mezzo secolo della mia vita, accetto che va bene lo stesso non essere andata alle Maldive, non aver preso l’Orient Express, non aver soggiornato al Ritz. Forse farò ancora in tempo e forse non me n’importa neanche più tanto.
I viaggi sono stati altri, spesso faticosi, come il primo lungo cammino che mi aspettava dopo quel fatidico compleanno. Un crudo e buio viaggio verso la maturità, tenendo per mano un padre che chiudeva il suo soggiorno terreno ben troppo presto.
Così, nel mio diario di viaggio, stipo ricordi che non si catturano con la macchina fotografica … le voci dei miei avi siciliani che vibrano tra i ruderi di Selinunte … lo sguardo dei ragazzi di strada di Johannesburg, venuti da noi e restii a tornare nella loro terribile realtà … le lacrime dei veterani dello sbarco a Pachino tornati su quella stessa spiaggia a distanza di 60 anni … la neve che fiocca sul filo spinato di Auschwitz … la paura dei miei compagni di viaggio nella malattia che, avendo portato via mio padre, tornò a chiamare anche me. Ma io feci orecchie da mercante.

Translation - English At the age of 51, my mind shuns all sense of tiredness and seeks respite in the dreams of 30 years ago, looking back to the day I came of age. I told myself then I would travel to all those far-away exotic places that enticed me, promising all manner of delights.
And travelled I have, though seldom where I’d hoped. Only now, in my second half century, can I accept that actually it’s okay not to have been to the Maldives, travelled by Orient Express or stayed at the Ritz. Some day perhaps I will but maybe I’m not so bothered any more.
The journeys I’ve made have been of another, often painful sort, like the first, long haul that awaited me after that momentous birthday, a bleak and sombre journey to maturity, holding my father’s hand as his life on earth came to an all too untimely end.
So the diary of my travels is packed with memories that can’t be captured with a camera … the voices of my Sicilian forebears rebounding among the ruins of Selinunte … the look on the faces of street children visiting from Johannesburg, loath to go back to their dreadful existence … the tears of veterans of the Pachino landing, back on that beach again 60 years on … snowflakes falling on the barbed wire at Auschwitz … and the fears of my companions when the illness that claimed my father came back to beckon me as well. Only I shut my eyes to it.

Source text - Italian La prima notizia certa su Melazzano risale al 1119. Il 15 novembre di quell’anno fu firmata una pergamena tuttora esistente nell’Archivio di Stato di Firenze in cui veniva fatta donazione di parte del castello e della corte di Melazzano. E’ di pochi anni dopo un altro contratto, questa volta di vendita, di una porzione dello stesso castello.
Nei secoli successivi il castello non viene più menzionato: rimane la parrocchia che da esso prende nome (S. Leo a Melazzano) ma di edifici di particolare consistenza non si fa più menzione.
Nel 1427, quando con il primo Catasto della Repubblica fiorentina si ha una descrizione particolareggiata delle proprietà della zona, vengono elencati una serie di poderi “con casa da lavoratore” (quello che noi chiameremmo una colonica) ma del vecchio castello sembra essersi persa la memoria.
Solo di recente, durante alcuni lavori, sono riemerse delle strutture murarie certamente tipiche di un castello per lo meno duecentesco, e si è così potuto riannodare il filo tra l’attuale Villa di Melazzano e il “castrum de Milatiano” medievale.
Se nel Quattrocento non si parla di “case da signore” nella zona, dopo un secolo la situazione sembra essere diversa: nelle Carte dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa (piccolo “Atlante Stradale” del contado fiorentino risalente alla metà del Cinquecento) Melazzano viene raffigurata come una tipica “casa turrita” padronale. Che si tratti proprio di Melazzano lo se deduce dalla chiara indicazione del proprietario :”Del Cavalier Bartoli”.
Nel Settecento Melazzano fu acquistato dalla famiglia Anichini che, inglobando le costruzioni precedenti, vi costruì la Villa che è rimasta alla famiglia fino ad oggi, con le grandi sale, gli affreschi dell’epoca, e con tutto il suo carattere.
Risale all’Ottocento l’attuale sistemazione della cappella annessa alla Villa, e alla fine del secolo gli Anichini di Melazzano furono tra gli artefici della nascita del Chianti Classico propugnata e iniziata dal Barone Ricasoli a Brolio.
Dai 25 barili di vino che Antonio di Filippo Rinieri dichiarava di aver prodotto nel 1427, si arrivava così fino ai i premi che sin dagli inizi del Novecento il vino di Melazzano si è guadagnato in numerose esposizioni.
Nel 1924, infine, Melazzano fu tra le 18 fattorie che fondarono il Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico, tuttora garante della qualità di quello che senza dubbio è uno dei vini più rinomati nel mondo.
Per questi ultimi anni non possiamo non ricordare i lavori – curati fin nei minimi particolari – che hanno riportato alla luce notevoli elementi murari dell’antico castello e che soprattutto hanno dotato Melazzano di tutte le comodità necessarie rispettando il vecchio fascino della casa. Oggi gli ospiti di Melazzano possono passare una vacanza comoda, tranquilla e serena in una tenuta che ha attraversato la storia della Toscana.
Melazzano è Dimora Storica coperta da vincolo ai sensi della Legge 1089 del 1939.
Translation - English The earliest definite mention of Melazzano was in 1119. A document signed on 15 November of that year still survives in the State archives in Florence. It registers the conveyance of part of the castle and courtyard of Melazzano as a gift. An agreement, a few years later, records the sale of part of the castle.
The castle gets no further mention in subsequent centuries; the parish church named after it (San Leo a Melazzano) still exists but there is no other record of buildings of any substance.
In 1427, when the first land register of the Florentine Republic describes the property of the area in detail, a number of holdings are listed “with worker’s houses” (what we would nowadays call farmhouses) but all record of the ancient castle seems to have been lost.
Only recently, in the course of work on the building, some elements of stonework have come to light that are unmistakeably characteristic of castles dating from the 13th century or earlier and, as a result, it has been possible to re-establish the link between the current Villa di Melazzano and the mediaeval “castrum de Milatiano”.
Although there is no mention of manor houses in the area in the 15th century, a hundred years later the situation had changed; in the "Maps of the Captains of the Guelf party” (a set of road-maps of the Florentine countryside dating from the middle of the 16th century), Melazzano is portrayed as a typical turreted manor house. That this is indeed a reference to Melazzano can be deduced from the unambiguous identification of the owner as a certain Cavalier Bartoli.
In the 18th century Melazzano was acquired by the Anichini family who incorporated the earlier buildings in the construction of the villa that still belongs to the family today, with its grand reception rooms, its original frescoes and its overall ambience.
The chapel attached to the villa dates in its present form from the 1800s. At the end of the century, the Anichini of Melazzano were amongst the original makers of Chianti Classico, championed and launched by Baron Ricasoli at Brolio.
From the 25 barrels of wine that Antonio di Filippo Rinieri claimed to have produced in 1427, wine from Melazzano reached the stage, from the early years of the 20th century onwards, where it was winning awards in numerous exhibitions.
In 1924, Melazzano was among the 18 estates that founded the “Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico”, a consortium that still guarantees the quality of what is, without doubt, one of the best known wines of the world.
We must not forget to mention the work undertaken in recent years - with the greatest attention to detail – that has brought to light some significant structural features of the ancient castle and that, above all, has provided Melazzano with all modern conveniences, at the same time respecting the old world charm of the house. Today’s guests at Melazzano can spend a comfortable, quiet and peaceful holiday on an estate that has witnessed the history of Tuscany.
Melazzano is a listed building, (subject to the provisions of law 1089 of 1939).
