The final report of the project “Family life and professional work: Conflict and synergy” (acronym: FamWork project) which was financially supported by the European Commission from 01.01.2003 through 30.09.2005 focuses mainly on psychological aspects of balancing work and family life in young dual-earner families from eight European countries (i.e., Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, The Netherlands). The total sample consists of 1747 families with at least one child in the age of 1 to 5. The design of the study requested both partners to participate in an extensive questionnaire study. In addition, a subsample of 576 couples also participated in a computer-assisted self-observation study.
The findings of both methodological approaches attest to the importance of psychological variables as major predictors of a more or less successful reconciliation of work and family demands and its ensuing outcomes (e.g., personal distress, relationship and work satisfaction, quality of parenting). On average, about three quarters of the explained variability of outcomes can be attributed to psychological influences comprising personality, cultural, and relationship variables along with specific cognitions and emotional reactions in dealing with the challenges of professional and family work (the latter including especially domestic work and childcare). In contrast, control and context variables (e.g., socio-economic status, type of work arrangements among partners) contribute only about a quarter to the explained effects of a dual-earner life-style in young families. Of particular interest are the findings from the computer-assisted self-observation study which provide strong evidence that difficulties in work-family reconciliation are preceded by stressful events at the workplace and followed by a decrease of personal and interpersonal well-being which, in turn, needs a considerably long time to recover.
Although the main pattern of findings is quite similar across nations and gender, there exist some important differences. Upon analyzing national differences, it turned out that specific cultural values such as a less egalitarian gender attitude and a higher degree of conservatism (both of which are more salient in countries belonging to the southern part of Europe) are associated with more difficulties in reconciling work and family demands. With respect to gender differences, the findings confirm that women as compared to their partners feel placed at a disadvantage in several respects in their attempts to successfully coordinate work and family life. In particular, women report a higher amount of perceived burden of domestic work and of personal distress than their partners in almost all participating nations.
Based on the findings of the FamWork project a series of implications and recommendations for measures to be taken at different levels of action (i.e., political, organizational, family and individual level) are provided as well as suggestions for appropriate dissemination strategies to publicise the FamWork findings.

Der letzte Bericht des Projektes „Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf" (Akronym: FamWork Projekt), welches von der europäischen Kommission für den Zeitraum 01.01.2003 bis 30.09.2005 finanziell gefördert wurde, richtet seinen Augenmerk hauptsächlich auf die psychologischen Aspekte der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf in Doppelverdienerhaushalten mit jungen Kindern aus acht europäischen Ländern (d.h. Österreich, Belgien, Finnland, Deutschland, Italien, Portugal, Schweiz, Niederlande). Die Gesamterhebung besteht aus 1747 Familien mit mindestens einem Kind im Alter von 1 bis 5 Jahren. Das Studiendesign sah einen umfangreichen Fragebogen für beide Partner vor. Eine Unterstichprobe von 576 Ehepaaren nahm zusätzlich auch an einer computergestützten Selbstbeobachtungs-Studie teil.
Die Ergebnisse beider methodologischen Ansätze bestätigen die Wichtigkeit psychologischer Variablen als bedeutender Prädikatoren eines mehr oder weniger geglückten Ausgleichs der Anforderungen in Beruf und Familie, sowie denn daraus folgenden Konsequenzen (z.B. persönliche Sorgen, Beziehungs- und Arbeitszufriedenheit, Qualität der Kindererziehung). Durchschnittlich können ca. dreiviertel der erklärten Variabilität der Ergebnisvariablen psychologischen Einflüssen zugeschrieben werden, also Persönlichkeits-, Kultur- und Beziehungs-Variablen, zusammen mit spezifischen Wahrnehmungen und emotionalen Reaktionen aufgrund der Herausforderungen von Berufs- und Familienarbeit (die letztere einschließend besonders Hausarbeit und Kindererziehung). Dahingegen erklären Kontroll- und Kontext-Variablen (z.B. sozio-wirtschaftlicher Status, Art der Arbeitsteilung unter Partnern) die beschriebenen Auswirkungen auf den Lebensstil junger Doppelverdienerfamilien nur zu einem Viertel. Von besonderem Interesse sind die Resultate der computergestützten Selbstbeobachtung. Hier zeigte sich, dass Probleme der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf stressige Ereignisse am Arbeitsplatz vorausgegangen sind, gefolgt von einer Abnahme persönlichen und zwischenmenschlichen Wohlbefinden, welches eine lange Erholungsphase erfordert.
Obwohl die einzelnen Nationen und Geschlechter ähnliche Ergebnisse aufwiesen, gibt es doch auch dort bedeutsame Unterschiede. Die Analyse nationaler Unterschiede zeigte, dass spezifische kulturelle Werte, wie eine positivere Einstellung zur Gleichberechtigung und vermehrter Konservatismus (beides besonders in den südlichen Ländern Europas) mit mehr Problemen der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf einhergehen. In Bezug auf Geschlechterunterschiede bestätigen die Ergebnisse, dass Frauen sich im Vergleich zu ihren Partnern bei ihren Bemühungen Familie und Beruf unter einem Hut zu bringen in mehreren Aspekten benachteiligt fühlen. In fast allen teilnehmenden Nationen berichten insbesondere Frauen über eine höher wahrgenommene Belastung durch Hausarbeiten und persönlichen Problemen, als ihre Partner.
Basierend auf den Ergebnissen vom FamWork, werden eine Reihe von Implikationen und Empfehlungen für Maßnahmen auf verschiedenen Handlungsebenen bereitgestellt (d.h., politisch, organisatorisch, Familie und Individuell), sowie Vorschläge für geeignete Verbreitungsstrategien, um die Ergebnisse von FamWork bekannt zu machen.
