I am a freelance translator specializing in:
- the humanities (literature, literary criticism, philosophy, etc.)
- social sciences (sociology, anthropology, history, etc.)
- health sciences
I also do copy-editing upon request.
Accomplishments and Qualifications
I am a native speaker of English with native fluency in Spanish. I can
translate in both directions. I am especially skilled at matching tone, register
and subtle shades of meaning between the two languages.
I have experience, either practical or academic, in all the fields in which
I specialize. My B.S. degree is in dietetics, and I worked in the Nursing
Education division (the continuing education department for nurses) in a
major medical center for three years. My M.A. and Ph.D. are both in Hispanic
literatures and culture, which has given me considerable exposure to the
humanities and social sciences. As part of my Ph.D. program, I also studied
education and pedagogical theory.
I am accurate and detail-oriented, and have a strong grounding in grammar
both in English and Spanish. I have considerable experience in copy-
editing, which has helped build my translating skills as well as honing my
eye for detail.
Translation: $0.06 - $0.20 per word
My prices start at $0.06 (six cents US) per word translated. The more complex
or less polished the source text, the higher the price will be, but I will never
charge more than $0.20 per word. I will not give a price quote without
seeing at least 2-3 pages of sample text from the document to be
There are varying degrees of editing that can be done, from simply reading
through for clarity and coherence to a full-scale check for grammar,
punctuation, spelling, awkward phrasing, etc. To account for such variations
and still keep the overall scheme simple, I charge hourly rates for editing,
rather than per word.
