In a finding that could help scientists develop ways to prevent or treat certain infections, researchers in Argentina have identified a genetic element that the dengue virus uses to replicate, triggering the potentially fatal illness known as dengue hemorrhagic fever.
In the August issue of the journal Genes & Development, virologist Andrea Gamarnik and colleagues describe how a viral enzyme recognizes and amplifies the genetic material needed to assemble new dengue viruses. Their findings provide the first model for RNA replication in the family of viruses that includes West Nile, St. Louis encephalitis, and hepatitis C.
These viruses, known as flaviviruses, cause millions of cases of human illness each year, but no vaccines or antiviral drugs exist to control most of the infections. Dengue fever is endemic in many tropical and subtropical regions, causing a severe, flu-like illness that sickens more than 50 million people and kills 25,000 each year.
Once a virus enters a host cell, its top priority is to copy its genetic code so that it can make more virus. Flaviviruses are so efficient at this task that they can churn out tens of thousands of copies of their genome—which is composed of ribonucleic acid, or RNA—within hours of infecting a cell.
For dengue and other flaviviruses, the first step is to produce viral proteins, including an enzyme that can copy RNA. But the viral RNA is not the only RNA in an infected cell. So once the enzyme, called RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), is produced, it finds itself surrounded by cellular RNA, creating a dilemma: How does RdRp distinguish viral from cellular RNA, to replicate the right molecule?
Last year, Gamarnik got her first hint when her group identified two RNA sequences located at the ends of the dengue virus genome. These short sequences interact during RNA replication, shaping the viral RNA genome into a circle.
Further studies of the dengue virus life cycle revealed another piece of the virus's RNA that recruits the enzyme RdRp. Found at one tip of the genome, that sequence adopts a characteristic stem-loop structure that the scientists suspected might be important to its function.

Cette déclaration a conduit au vote de la Loi de Base sur la Propriété Intellectuelle en novembre de cette année-là, selon laquelle le Conseil Stratégique pour la Propriété Intellectuelle présidé par le Premier Ministre et composé de tous les ministres du Cabinet et des intellectuels du secteur privé était formé au sein du Cabinet en mars 2003. The “Intellectual Property Based Nation Development” became therein, a national objective for the first time since the Meiji Era. This announcement led to the passing of the “Basic Law on Intellectual Property” in November that year, that enabled in March 2003, the formation within the Cabinet, of the Intellectual Property Policy Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister and made up of all the cabinet ministers and some intellectuals from the private sector. The objectives of the Intellectual Property Policy Committee are to cover all governmental measures relative to intellectual property decided and created each financial year, an ”Intellectual Property Strategic Program”, characterised as a progress plan to complete the “Intellectual Property Based Nation Development”. This Strategic Program for each financial year has, without exception, given good results. Concurrently, to insure a prompt adaptation to changes in circumstances, the Policy Committee has adopted the method of the working plan (a method under which a medium-term plan is considered and amended each year), which is largely used amongst the private sector companies, and has, up to now, developed a strategic plan for 2003 and 2004. To this day, it has obtained great results, such as the establishment of an Intellectual Property High Court, for prompt and rational settlement of disputes (i.e., to normalise the decisions in an efficient manner at the initial stage) and the ability to deal with intellectual property in specialised areas such as technologies; the passing of the bill for “Reducing Patent Pendency” whose objectives are to achieve the reduction of the waiting period for patent examination as this tends to be longer than in Europe and America. Finally, on the 10Th of June 2005, a third Strategic Plan, the “Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2005”, was launched. It includes an action plan for new projects such as the “Global Patent System”, the “Promotion of the Japanese Brand Strategy”, and the “Proposal for a Treaty to fight counterfeits and pirated products”. DFMO is effective and better tolerated, but its availability is not guaranteed and it is difficult to use. Nifurtimox, a treatment of Chagas' disease but used in the 1980s in series of cases of HAT, is at present the only other potential candidate for the treatment of late-stage HAT.
The limited number of compounds available, the lack of prospects for the development of new products and the emergence of resistance are arguments for the use of therapeutic combinations, which at the same time should reduce the dosages of the drugs used and hence improve their safety. These new protocols, however, must be validated in terms of therapeutic efficacy and clinical safety. Three therapeutic combinations are nowadays possible: [melarsoprol + nifurtimox], [melarsoprol + DFMO] and [DFMO + nifurtimox].

Malaysia. I have managed a microbiology laboratory in Australia for 6 years and was the project director of numerous projects dealing with waste and water treatment as well as catchment issues. While managing this microbiology lab, I even discovered new biocides and went through the process of characterising chemical compounds, bioassaying on a range of target organisms (for activity and toxicity), and seeking (and getting) funding through capital venture funds.

I worked as a translator for a chinese software company based in Switzerland. I translated a software for teaching Chinese characters and some commercial letters from English to French.
