English to German: Germany and the Sudan: An overview
Source text - English Within the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany exports exports the greatest quantity of both goods and services to Sudan and has tripled its exports between 2003 and 2006 (Source: Eurostat), which turned Germany into the 5th most important trade partner for the Sudanese government world-wide. It is important to mention in this context, that the goods and services sold to Sudan would, due their capital- and knowledge-based nature, be extremely hard to supply from other sources should Germany decide to stop selling them. Should German companies withdraw economically from Sudanese business, they would tear a gap into their economy that would be more than difficult to fill from other sources. Knowing this, the Sudanese government has a great interest in keeping this scenario from happening - and this is exactly the angle from which Germany can assert its influence. Berlin can make Khartoum understand that genocide is unacceptable under any circumstances and that continuing their current policies would create substantial economical and political costs for the Sundanese Government.
German Campaigns
Both Genocide Alert and the Society for Threatened Peoples are working on presenting draft laws to parliament, which aim to create a black list of all companies, trading with Sudan at the expense of human rights. In this context, they demand that the federal government should exclude companies from public procurement who bargain with
(A) the centralized Sudanese government,
(B) companies the Sudanese government has direct or indirect rights to,
(C) consortia or projects commissioned by the Sudanese government,
or
(D) companies involved in said consortia or projects.
Excluded from this are companies whose primary concern for being in Sudan is to supply humanitarian relief supplies or services - be it medicine or medical equipment, agricultural goods, help for the infrastructure and education, information or information material, services of a strictly religious or reporting nature, food and clothing, and commercial operations with the regional government of southern Sudan.
Current developments:
A number of social democrat and green Members of Parliament have declared their support for this campaign. Corresponding policy propositions and petitions on regional and national party congresses are already in motion and will be put to vote in the following months.
Kampagnen in Deutschland

Experience
Years of experience: 2. Registered at ProZ.com: May 2007.
As a student of translating my experiences in the field are of yet a little limited. But I have been working as a voluntary translator/translation coordinator for the German NGO "Genocide Alert", coming across texts of mostly political and humanitarian topics.
I am passionate about the accurate and creative use of language, the melody of sentences and the integrity of texts and would be greatful for any opportunity to gain experience.
