Source text - English Having gained the support of Ruskin, who urged artists to ‘go to nature, rejecting nothing, selecting nothing and scorning nothing’, the Pre-Raphaelite artists sought a new painting language that was more naturalistic, often using brilliant colours painted on a white ground with meticulous detailing, giving a brilliant, all-over effect. Much of the work was now being painted out of doors in order to capture the full effects of natural light. The most notable early examples of this ‘style’ are Millais’ Ophelia and Hunt’s Our English Coasts, both completed in 1852. Clearly they were entirely different subjects to paint and showed the diversity of subject matter that continued to be employed by the Pre-Raphaelite artists, although shortly after a new motif was added to their repertoire – the social-conscience picture used to comment on Victorian society, its mores, social taboos and moral issues. The most notable example of this motif is Hunt’s The Awakening Conscience, painted between 1853 and 1854.
The initial period of collaborative co-existence in the Brotherhood was all but over by 1854, when Hunt left for the Holy Land to paint, and Millais was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. Writing at this time to his sister Christina, Rossetti used an Arthurian metaphor to express his feelings ‘so now the whole Round Table is dissolved’. Millais, often seen as the early leader of the Brotherhood, pursued his career as a Realist painter of historical (often imagined) narratives, modern allegories and as a portraitist, seeking an essence in his pictures of a ‘beauty without subject’. Hunt continued to make trips to the Holy Land in search of geographical and ethnic authenticity for his paintings of religious subjects. This left Rossetti, who in 1856 had met William Morris (1834–96) and Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833–98), two Oxford undergraduates who aspired to be artists. Their subsequent collaboration on the commission to decorate the library walls of the new Oxford Union, based on Arthurian legend, marked a second phase in Pre-Raphaelitism that saw Rossetti emerging as their new leader. The capricious medievalism of the commission was, however, short-lived and gave way to a deeper seriousness in the work of Rossetti and Burne-Jones. Although they retained much of the Pre-Raphaelite agenda for freshness, the pronounced naturalism was superseded by symbolism, the realism became idealism and worldly concerns gave way to ethereal subjects. Rossetti became interested in the beauty of a woman’s soul, her inner rather than her physical beauty. He became obsessed with the ‘courtly love’ of Dante and Beatrice, and the depiction of single female figures, often voluptuous, always sensual and sometimes mildly erotic. However, as his work became more repetitive and he became more reclusive, Burne-Jones emerged as the leader of Pre-Raphaelitism.

Si trattava chiaramente di soggetti del tutto diversi da realizzare e che mostravano la varietà dei temi impiegati dai preraffaelliti, ciò nonostante poco più tardi si aggiunse al loro repertorio il nuovo tema dell’opera di coscienza sociale, utilizzato per criticare la società vittoriana, i suoi costumi, i tabù sociali e le questioni morali. L’esempio più notevole di questo tema è Il risveglio della coscienza di Hunt, dipinto fra il 1853 e il 1854.

Trabajaba duro, había manejado ya varios proyectos de vital importancia para el avance de los negocios en los que se embarcaba la empresa; meses, días, horas frente a mi escritorio, seleccionando candidatos, revisando solicitudes, asignando proyectos y asegurándome de que cada proveedor de servicios recibiera su pago sin demoras.
¿Cómo era posible entonces que los demás estuviesen empacando sus trajes de baño o sus botas de nieve cuando yo sudaba excesivamente bajo el traje de corte inglés? Yo, que preparaba el café de la mañana y la tarde, que contestaba todas las llamadas que Gutiérrez y Amingorena no querían atender, que lidiaba con los asuntos desagradables entre proveedores y clientes, ¿no habría vacaciones para mí?
Veía como cada empleado entraba en la oficina de Vargas y salía triunfante, sonriendo, pensando en las vacaciones que acababa de ganarse. Trajinó en un muestrario buscando un color nuevo y cuando se decidió por el verde pálido el tapicero llamó a dos ayudantes que levantaron los muebles rumbo al taller.
[...] Ofelia los vio irse y siguió con la mirada el rastro de cositas que iban saliendo de entre los cojines: un botón, dos alfileres, una pluma que ya no pintaba, unas llaves de quién sabe dónde, un boleto de Bellas Artes que nunca encontraron a tiempo para llegar a la función, el rabo de unos anteojos, dos almendras que fueron botana y un papelito color de rosa, doblado en cuatro, que Ofelia recogió con el mismo sosiego con que había ido recogiendo los demás triques.
Lo abrió. Tenía escrito un recado con letras grandes e imprecisas que decía: «Corazón: has lo que lo que tu quieras, lo que mas quieras, has lo que tu decidas, has lo que mas te convenga, has lo que sientas mejor para todos».
«¿Has?», dijo Ofelia en voz alta. ¿Su marido se había ido con una mujer que escribía «haz» de hacer como «has» de haber? ¿Con una que no le ponía el acento a «tú» el pronombre y lo volvía «tu» el adjetivo? ¿Con alguien capaz de confundir el «más» de cantidad con el «mas» de no obstante?
La ortografía es una forma sutil de la elegancia de alma, quien no la tiene puede vivir en donde se le dé la gana.
Según el pliego que debía firmar, la causa del divorcio era incompatibilidad de caracteres. «Nada más cierto», pensó ella. «La ortografía es carácter». Firmó.

Lo aprì. Sopra, un messaggio scritto con lettere grandi e imprecise diceva: "Amore: fa quello che vuoi, quello che più vuoi, fa quello che ti decidi, fa quello che ti e più conveniente, fa quello che ti credi meglio per tutti."
"Fa?" disse Ofelia a voce altra. Suo marito se n'era andato con una donna che scriveva "fa'" imperativo di "fare" come "fa" terza persona singolare? Con una che non metteva l'accento su "è" verbo e lo faceva diventare "e" congiunzione? Con una in grado di confondere il "ti" complemento con "tu" pronome?
L'ortografia è una forma sottile di eleganza dell'anima, chi non ce l'ha può andare a vivere dove gli pare.
Secondo il documento che doveva firmare, la causa del divorzio era l'incompatibilità di carattere. "Niente di più vero," pensò lei. "L'ortografia è il carattere." E firmò.
