Source text - English O uso de reforços representa uma revolução no conceito usualmente
adotado em projetos geotécnicos. Não que se trate, de fato, de prática nova, pois há milênios se usam elementos fibrosos associados a solos. Incas, babilônios e chineses adotaram solo, bambu e palha em suas construções.
Também pássaros, como o joão-de-barro, e castores usam procedimentos similares.
No entanto, entende-se que o uso racional da técnica se iniciou
na década de 1960, com Henri Vidal, que patenteou e desenvolveu uma metodologia para projeto de um sistema que passou a ser denominado “Terre Armée”.
Externamente, um muro de solo reforçado não difere de uma
estrutura convencional. A questão particular é a estabilidade interna.
Tal qual nas peças de concreto armado, os reforços permitem ao solo
melhor desempenho mecânico. Inclinações e alturas de aterros que, de outra forma, seriam impossíveis, tornam-se viáveis.
Translation - Portuguese The use of reinforcements represents a revolution to the concept generally used in geotechnical projects. Not that this is indeed a new practice, as fibrous elements associated with soils have been in use for thousands of years. Incas, Babylonians and the Chinese adopted soil, bamboo and straw in their constructions. In addition, birds, such as the Red Ovenbird, and beavers use similar procedures.
However, it is understood that the rational use of the technique
began in the 1960s, with Henri Vidal, who patented and developed a
methodology for a system design that went on to be called “Terre Armée”.
Externally, a reinforced soil wall is no different from a conventional
structure. The particular issue is internal stability. Much like in the structures of reinforced concrete, reinforcements allow for better mechanical performance of the soil. Slopes and landfill heights that would otherwise be impossible, become feasible.
