Giens Peninsula[tag:z:097][tag:z:097]
Double Isthmus
The Gien peninsula is a rare natural phenomenon, created when strong currents and the mouths of the two rivers straddling the former island of Giens created a double isthmus on the rocky seabed, linking it to the mainland.
The parallel bars (each 4km/2.5mi long), enclose a lagoon, the Étang des Pesquiers, that provides an ideal habitat for water fowl. The best time to see flamingoes is in mid-September when up to 1 500 birds migrate here.
For three decades the west isthmus has been eroded by wind and by storms which attack the sea walls, sweep away the beach and cover parts of the road with sand. A project by the Conservatoire du Littoral is currently in progress to preserve this site.
Giens
The small seaside resort village has castle ruins that form a mound from which there is a magnificent panorama[tag:z:097][tag:z:097] (viewing table). The exiled Nobelprize-winning poet St-John Perse lies at rest in the cemetery. To the south is the little port of Niel, surrounded by a lovely pine wood.
[tag:z:061] Drive east from the village to the Tour Fondue.
Tour Fondue
Boats sail from here to the Île de Porquerolles. The name comes from the 17C fort which controlled the narrows of La Petite Passe. There is a beautiful view of the islands and the Giens peninsula.
Tour of the peninsula on foot
[tag:z:079]18km/11mi – allow 5hr.
The partly-signed route links the port of La Madrague to Badine beach through mountainous and pine-forested coastline. The path leads past hidden beaches and rocky inlets.

Półwysep Giens[tag:z:097][tag:z:097]
Podwójny przesmyk
Półwysep Gien jest rzadkim naturalnym fenomenem, powstałym, gdy wartkie nurty ujść dwóch rzek opływały z obu stron dawną wyspę Giens i utworzyły podwójny przesmyk na skalistym dnie morza, łącząc wyspę ze stałym lądem.
Biegnące równolegle odnogi (każda o długości 4km/2.5mili) zamykają lagunę, Étang des Pesquiers, i zapewniają idealne warunki dla wodnego ptactwa. By podziwiać flamingi, najlepiej przyjechać tu w połowie września, kiedy to pojawia się tu aż do 1.500 tych ptaków.

Repeated protests by Tibetans in Kardze in eastern Tibet reinforce the Tibetans' indomitable courage and deep yearning for freedom and return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to TibetDHARAMSHALA: Peaceful protests against the repressive policies of the Chinese government have continued unabated in Kardze since 6 June. The Tibetan protesters are being subjected to severe beatings, arrests and incarceration. Over 20 Tibetans have been arrested and thrown into jail during the past 10 days of protests.
In a latest incident, a monk of Dhargyal Monastery in Kardze took to the streets on Saga Dawa, one of the holiest religious festivals marked by Buddhists this year on 15 June. “Ngawang Lobsang, 37, shouted slogans of “freedom for Tibet” “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama” and distributed leaflets amidst a large gathering in the street of Kardze on Saga Dawa,” a monk in Sera monastery in south India with knowledge of the incident said.
“He knelt down and, with hands in supplication, raised high-pitched shouts of “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama” and “Tibet demands freedom.” No sooner the slogans raised he was severely beaten by the police with iron batons and taken away for detention, the monk said.
Earlier on 14 June, Ngawang Lobsang went to the main market in Kardze and spent 800 Chinese Yuan to print many copies of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's photo. During the morning prayer assembly, fellow monks saw him praying for success in his action the next day.
Separately on 11 June at around 4 pm, Passang Rinchen, a monk of Khangmar Monastery in Kardze, chanted slogans of “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama” and “Tibet wants freedom”. Like Ngawang Lobsang, he was also severely beaten and forcibly whisked away in a police van.
Next day at around 4:30 pm, a 27-year-old woman named Tenzin Lhatso took to the street in Kardze demanding ‘return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet” and “ensure human rights in Tibet”. A group of armed police and paramilitary personnel brutally beat her before being taken away for detention. Tenzin Lhatso, daughter of Dorjee Dudul and Wangmo, is a native of Lha Kyidong village in Thingka township in Kardze.
Again on 13 June, two nuns from Gemadrak nunnery, Namgyal Lhamo and Tashi Choedon staged peaceful demonstration. They were mercilessly beaten and thrown into prison.
That was followed by a similar protest by three other nuns, Jampa Choedon, Lhamo and Yangchen. The trio took to the street shouting slogans of “long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama”, Tibetans demand freedom in Tibet” and “invite His Holiness the Dalai lama to Tibet”. Consequently, they were beaten by the police and taken into custody.
Moreover, the public security bureau in Kardze has completely barred monks and nuns from traveling to the main town.
Those needing to visit hospitals should be accompanied by a government official with a written permission from the local and township authorities. Anyone caught without fulfilling these preconditions would be arrested, the authorities have ordered.

Ponad 20 Tybetańczyków zostało aresztowanych i wtrąconych do więzienia w ciągu ostatnich 10 dni protestów.
Niezależnie od niego, 11 czerwca ok. godz.16.00 Passang Rinchen, mnich z klasztoru Khangmar w Kardze, wykrzykiwał slogany „Niech żyje Jego Świątobliwość Dalajlama” i „Tybet chce wolności”. On też został dotkliwie pobity w policyjnym radiowozie.
Grupa uzbrojonych policjantów i sił paramilitarnych brutalnie ją pobiła i aresztowała. Tenzin Lhatso, córka Dorjee Dudul i Wangmo, zamieszkuje w wiosce Lha Kyidong, w rejonie Thingka okręgu Kardze.
13 czerwca 2 mniszki z klasztoru Gemadrak, Namgyal Lhamo i Tashi Choedon, przeprowadziły pokojową manifestację. Zostały bezlitośnie pobite i wtrącone do więzienia.
Podobne protesty przeprowadziły 3 inne mniszki - Jampa Choedon, Lhamo i Yangchen. Wyszły na ulice krzycząc „Niech żyje Jego Świątobliwość Dalajlama”, „Tybetańczycy domagają się wolnego Tybetu” oraz „Zapraszamy Jego Świątobliwość Dlajlamę do Tybetu”. Zostały pobite i aresztowane.

Source text - English China: More Tibetan monks set themselves on fire to protest repression
Monday’s reported self-immolation attempt by two young Tibetan monks in
Sichuan province is the
third such incident since March this year.
According to the official Chinese news agency, the two were promptly taken
to a hospital. However,
the Tibetan exiled sources say that their exact whereabouts are unknown and
that it is possible that
one of them died on the spot.
These recent immolations have reportedly been protests against the Chinese
government’s
repression of freedom of religion and cultural rights in Tibetan areas.
Amnesty International urges
the Chinese government to end these repressive practices immediately and
respect the right of
Tibetans to practice their culture and religion.
The Chinese government has clamped down on the monasteries at the centre of
these incidents:
Kirti monastery in Ngaba county, Sichuan Province, and Nyitse monastery in
Kardze country, also in
Sichuan.
The latest attempt at Kirti this week has taken place only six weeks after
the death of a Nyitse monk
Tsewang Norbu, who self-immolated on 15 August, calling for freedom and for
the Dalai Lama’s
return.
Tsewang Norbu’s fatal act was reportedly motivated by the Chinese
authorities’ heavy-handed tactics
since the Kirti Monastery monk Phuntsok’s self-immolation in March.
One of the monks who self-immolated this week is reported to be
Phuntsok’s brother. Six months
ago, Phuntsok is said to have shouted slogans such as “Long live the
Dalai Lama” as he set himself
on fire.
Phuntsok’s act recalled the 2009 protest by another Kirti monastery monk
Tapey, who burned
himself while raising a self-made Tibetan flag with a picture of the Dalai
Lama at its centre.
Phuntsok’s suicide this March was followed by protests, mass arrests of
people including around
300 Kirti monastery monks, enforced disappearances and possible killings by
the security forces.
High schools where students expressed solidarity with the Kirti monastery
monks were reportedly
blockaded and raided, and books burned by security forces.
Two elderly Tibetans - a 65-year old woman called Sherkyi and a 60-year old
man Dongkho - died
after local residents clashed with security forces whilst trying to stop
the mass arrest of Kirti
monastery monks. Another Tibetan, Chukpel, 24 died in hospital soon after
police reportedly beat
him. He had been staging a protest for self-governance for Tibetans outside
a local police station in
Ngaba.
Three of the monks arrested, one of them Phuntsok’s uncle, have recently
been sentenced to 10
and 13 years imprisonment for encouraging the self-immolation or for
“intentional homicide”.
Among the some 300 monks detained in Marchwere children, whom the Chinese
authorities say
were taken away for “patriotic education”, which consists of
denunciation of the Dalai Lama and
inculcation in the Chinese government’s version of Tibetan history.
Most of the monks have since been released, but Amnesty International knows
of least five more
people who have each been sentenced to three years imprisonment in ongoing
criminal proceedings.
Their names are Lobsang Khedup, Lobsand Gyatso, Dhonyoe Dorjee, Lobsang
Dhargay and Kunchok
Tsultrim. The exact charges and other details of their trials are unknown,
but Amnesty International
has frequently documented violations of the right to fair trial in Tibet
and elsewhere in China. At
least three others have been assigned to Re-education Through Labour.
According to Tibetan exile sources, the security forces took control in
Kardze after the Nyitse
monastery immolation last month. There were reports that the security
forces cut off water,
electricity and food supplies to the monastery. Internet and mobile phone
text messaging services
are reportedly unavailable in Ngaba county.
And in Kirti monastery, the “patriotic education” of monks continues on
a daily basis.
Translation - Polish Chiny – Więcej Tybetańskich mnichów podpala się w proteście przeciwko represjom
Według oficjalnej chińskiej agencji prasowej mnisi zostali niezwłocznie przetransportowani do szpitala.
Amnesty International wezwało rząd Chin do natychmiastowego zaprzestania represji i respektowania prawa Tybetańczyków do kultywowania swoich tradycji i religii.
Nieznane są szczegóły dotyczące zarzutów i procesów, lecz Amnesty International wielokrotnie udokumentowała pogwałcenie prawa do sprawiedliwego procesu w Tybecie i innych rejonach Chin.

Okolice Spytkowic w XIX stuleciu należały do monarchii habsburskiej (Cesarstwo Austrii, następnie Cesarstwo Austro-Węgier). Należały do powiatu myślenickiego w cesarskiej prowincji Galicji.
Okres międzywojenny to czas dalszego, intensywnego rozwoju miejscowości.
Początek II wojny światowej boleśnie doświadczył miejscowość i jej mieszkańców. W pierwszych wojennych godzinach czynny opór nacierającym wojskom niemieckim stawił oddział Wojska Polskiego dowodzony przez porucznika Tadeusza Stefaniszyna. W trakcie walk porucznik zginął. Miejscowość zostaje częściowo spalona przez hitlerowców. Czas hitlerowskiej okupacji kończy się 01 stycznia 1945 r., kiedy nacierająca Armia Czerwona wypiera Niemców z miejscowości.
Po II wojnie światowej Spytkowice funkcjonowały w strukturach Gromadzkich Rad Narodowych podległych Prezydiom Powiatowych Rad Narodowych.
W 1973 roku powstała gmina Spytkowice, lecz wkrótce została zlikwidowana. Wieś została przyłączona do Gminy Raba Wyżna.
Mieszkańcy Spytkowic w wolnej już Polsce rozpoczęli starania o przywrócenie gminy w swojej miejscowości. Ich starania okazały się skuteczne. W dniu 1 stycznia 1998 roku powołano na nowo gminę Spytkowice.
Translation - English The history of Spytkowice
The first written records of settlement in these areas come from 1234, when the land was administered by the voivode Teodor. However, he did not run a settlement campaign for long, as he did not have a descendant. He bequeathed his goods to the Cistercian order. In 1241 the Tatars went through the Spytkowicka Pass during their invasion of Poland. As a result of invasions and wars as well as problems with the Cistercian order, further colonization in the area in question was interrupted. In 1505 Jan Jordan obtained the lands of Nowy Targ.

The village of Spytkowice, unlike other villages, was based on Polish law. The village administratively belonged to the Szczyrzyc County and was a border village between Galicia and Hungary.
Another source information about Spytkowice comes from 1568, when a document about the division of Spytek Jordan's property after his death appeared in the Krakow court records. Over the years, the town gained importance due to the development of the trade route to Hungary, which became the main trade route to the south of Europe.
Around 1671, Spytkowice was purchased by Rafał Kazimierz of Borzyń Makowiecki of the Pomian coat of arms. A noteworthy event was the hearing held on April 24, 1758 in the church in Raba Wyżna, at the request of Andrzej Stanisław Załuski, the bishop of Kraków, on the establishment of a parish in Spytkowice. After the partitions, in 1769, Austrian troops filled the position of the Spis starost. The Austrian government sought to sever the ties with Poland of the inhabitants of the seized areas, which it called Galicia. The last heir of Spytkowice sold the property to peasants in 1890.In the nineteenth century, the area around Spytkowice belonged to the Habsburg monarchy (the Austrian Empire, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire). They belonged to the Myślenice poviat in the imperial province of Galicia.During World War I, the inhabitants of Spytkowice fought in both the imperial army and the Polish army of General Józef Haller.
After regaining independence in 1918, Spytkowice functioned as an independent unit in the administrative structures in force at that time.
The interwar period was a time of further intensive development of the town.
On July 17, 1929, during a stopover from the journey, the historic inn hosted the President of the Republic of Poland - Ignacy Mościcki.
On September 1, 1939, World War II broke out.Pretty soon these areas came under German occupation. The General Government was established with its seat in Krakow (October 12, 1939), headed by the governor, Hans Frank. The General Government consisted of 4 districts, including the district of Kraków.As part of it, a vast district of Nowy Targ was created together with the vicinity of Spytkowice (the district of Myślenice was liquidated). The beginning of World War II painfully experienced the town and its inhabitants. In the first hours of the war, an active resistance to the advancing German troops was put up by a unit of the Polish Army commanded by Lieutenant Tadeusz Stefaniszyn.During the fighting, the lieutenant was killed. The town was partially burnt down by the Nazis. The time of Nazi occupation ended on January 1, 1945, when the advancing Red Army pushed the Germans out of the town.
After the Second World War, Spytkowice functioned in the structures of the Gromada National Councils subordinate to the Presidencies of the District National Councils.
In 1973, the commune of Spytkowice was established, but was soon abolished. The village was incorporated into the Raba Wyżna Commune.
Inhabitants of Spytkowice in now free Poland began efforts to restore the commune in their town.Their efforts proved effective, and on January 1, 1998, the Spytkowice commune was re-established.
