Source text - Spanish Un niño de cinco o seis años que corría llorando, rodó por el suelo. Otros niños que corrían junto a él huyeron despavoridos pero un chiquito como de seis años se regresó a sacudirlo: "Jua-nito, Juanito, levántate." Lo empezó a jalonear como si con eso fuera a reanimarlo: "Juanito ¿qué te pasó?" Seguramente no sabía lo que es la muerte, y no lo iba a saber nunca, porque sus preguntas ya no se oyeron, sólo un quejido, y los dos pequeños cuerpos quedaron tirados sobre el asfalto, el uno encima del
otro. Yo lo vi todo. Quería arrastrar al pequeño hasta la zanja
donde me encontraba. Le grité varías veces pero como las balas
silbaban por todas partes no me atreví a ir por él. Me limité a
gritarle: "¡Niño, niño, ven acá, niño!", pero estaba demasiado
ocupado en revivir a su amigo. ¡Hasta que le dio la bala! Sé que
soy un cobarde, pero sé también que el instinto de conservación
es terriblemente egoísta. |

Translation - Czech Jeden utíkající plačící chlapec, měl pět nebo šest let, upadl na zem. Další kluci, kteří běželi s ním, zděšeně utekli, jen asi šestiletý chlapec se vrátil a zatřásl s ním: „Juanito, Juanito, zvedni se!“ Začal s ním cloumat, jako by ho chtěl probudit: „Juanito, co se ti stalo?“ Určitě netušil, co je to smrt, a ani se to nikdy nedozví, protože jeho otázky už nebyly slyšet, jen vzlyk a dvě malá tělíčka zůstala ležet na ulici, jedno přes druhé. Viděl jsem to všechno. Chtěl jsem chlapce přitáhnout do jámy, kde jsem se schovával. Několikrát jsem na něj zakřičel, ale protože všude svištěly kulky, neodvážil jsem se pro něj jít. Jen jsem na něj volal: „Chlapče, chlapče, pojď sem za mnou!“ Ale byl příliš zaujatý oživováním svého kamaráda. A pak ho trefila kulka! Vím, jsem zbabělec, ale taky vím, že pud sebezáchovy je děsivě sobecký.
