Dutch term

meeverbonden

Dutch to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) mortgages
De aflossing van de hypothecaire schuld, de eventueel verschuldigde premies voor de meeverbonden gemengde verzekeringen worden niet als kosten van de huishouding beschouwd.

This is from a cohabitation contract. Does "meeverbonden" mean in this respect that the insurances are part of the mortgage contract, i.e. if you want the mortgage, you also have to take out the insurance?

Discussion

Kitty Brussaard Dec 10, 2020:
Collateral assignment (of life insurance policies) In this context, 'meeverbonden' should be read more fully as 'tot zekerheid meeverbonden', i.e. collaterally assigned 'gemengde verzekeringen'.

I understand that the term 'gemengde verzekeringen' covers 'assurance on survival to a stipulated age or on earlier death' (possibly to be translated as 'mixed life insurance policies' but you will need to further look into that yourself). See https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=celex:32...
Tina Vonhof (X) Dec 9, 2020:
Eventueel means that you may or may not have additional/related insurance, such as life and/or property/homeowner insurance. You are not obligated to have this other insurance but many people may choose to do so. I don't think the answers provided so far are totally clear on this point.

I read it like you do. E.g. death cover so the part of the mortgage paid by the dead partner is paid off. I don't know if home insurance is covered by this. It is mandatory by law and no lender will give you a mortgage without proof of it in Belgium, but then maybe it is deemed to be a 'household management cost'.

Hmmm, probably not. These things are always opt-ins as far as I know. In Belgium anyway, I suspect as it is illegal to sell anything as a requirement for the main sale (koppelverkoop). Besides, I think it would then then be impossible to change insurance company for something like life insurance.

Otherwise as the client.
Note from asker:
I just wonder if the "meeverbonden" means that they are part of the mortgage contract, so if they do not get a mortgage without taking the "meeverbonden" insurance.
Thank you for that. This is a Dutch document, though. I don't know if the situation in the Netherlands differs from Belgium?

agree philgoddard : I don't think it matters for translation purposes whether it's compulsory or not.

relevant / co-insured

not sure why it says eventueel - de eventueel verschuldigde premies ... why would the contributions be contingent and what would they be contingent upon? Someone not dying? Doesn't make sense.

The sentence looks incorrect, looks like there is a missing, "As regards" in the beginning.
Note from asker:
Maybe "eventueel" refers to the fact that premiums may not be required as no insurances have to be taken out...

Dutch term (edited): meeverbonden gemengde verzekeringen

BrE: endowment/ mortgage /

Endowment, life assurance-linked mortgages are an option in the UK but, here, seems to be a no-option scene.

'An endowment mortgage is a mortgage loan arranged on an interest-only basis where the capital is intended to be repaid by one or more (usually Low-Cost) endowment policies. The phrase "endowment mortgage" is used mainly in the United Kingdom by lenders and consumers to refer to this arrangement and is not a legal term.'

Though my knowledge of Dutch is threadbare, I doubt meevorbonden - as optionally co-linked like mitverbunden in DEU - is the same as a compulsory-bound verbonden commitment, besides which 'de *eventueel* verschuldigde premies voor de meeverbonden gemengde verzekeringen ' as any premiums owed suggests it is not. Otherwise, should we be worried that no else has picked up on the endowment point....
Example sentence:

IATE: Entry domains: administrative law [POLITICS > executive power and public service] demography and population (2816) [SOCIAL QUESTIONS] COM en endowment mortgage COM nl hypotheek met gemengde levensverzekering COM

Note from asker:
Thank you for that. I once had an endowment and I know how it works. The text refers to possible premiums for insurances, so in the event that they take out a type of mortgage that necessitates or requires any insurance, like a life insurance or an insurance that covers the mortgage if you are incapacitated for work. For me the "verbonden" signifies that you are bound to take it. So no mortgage without the insurance. But I may be misinterpret it.

collaterally assigned

In this specific context, 'meeverbonden' means that the relevant life insurance policies ('gemengde verzekeringen') have been assigned as collateral to the mortgage provider in order to secure the loan.

The term 'gemengde verzekeringen' covers 'assurance on survival to a stipulated age or on earlier death'. See also the link in my D-box entry.

In other words, meeverbonden = tot zekerheid meeverbonden = als onderpand dienend = verpand.

Hi Willemina, you're welcome and indeed, 'endowment' seems absolutely fine here. Note also that 'pledged' could be an alternative for 'collaterally assigned'. In this specific case, 'meeverbonden gemengde verzekeringen" >> endowment policies/contracts taken out together with the loan and pledged to the relevant lender in order to secure the loan.
Note from asker:
Many thanks. Mixed insurances is translated by Van den End as "Endowment", which seems to fit the context. An endowment mortgage goes hand in hand with an insurance to ensure that at the end of the term the capital of the mortgage will be paid out. There has been a lot to do about these in the past in the UK, due to the insurance shortfall that many encountered...

4.1 Bij het algeheel aflossen van de hypotheek kan het volgende met de Spaargarant Verzekering gebeuren:
a. bij verkoop voortzetten
bij verkoop van de betrokken woning kan de verzekering nog maximaal zes maanden ongewijzigd worden voortgezet;
b. meeverbinden met een nieuwe Spaargarant Hypotheek
de verzekering kan direct worden meeverbonden met een bij de hypotheeknemer nieuw gesloten Spaargarant Hypotheek;
