It seems there are five "levels of weathering" and each is called weathering but something different in French.

1.désagrégation (see def)
2.dégradation (see def)
3.altération (chemical proces attacking the rock))
4.destruction (as dégradation but more limited)
5. Effritement (light erosion)

(1) def:Dissociation des éléments constitutifs d'une roche sous l'effet de la météorisation libérant des débris de taille variée

(2) def:Processus géologique de transformation causé par l'action chimique et physique des agents atmosphériques sur la roche, au niveau ou près de la surface de la lithosphère

If you read (1) the process is due to meteorisation, referring to your comment in Portug. I think this is the term to use
