I would like to hear from anyone who has used Glossy (http://www.foreignword.biz/software/glossy/) for translating web pages. How does it stack up against Trados or other CAT tools? It looks like a good tool from their web page.

No CAT tool Jul 28, 2003

Hi Edward,

as far as I know, Glossy is not a CAT tool, but a tool to build your own glossaries.

You can integrate it into Word and it will highlight any words or expression that can be found in a glossary. Unlike Trados or any other CAT tool, it will not suggest complete sentences or fuzzy matches.

I for one have not tested it as I am very satisfied with my current CAT tool and its glossary function (Wordfast).

Regards,

A CAT tool indeed, but for HTML pages only Aug 11, 2003

Hi Edward,

I work with Glossy, but only the glossary function. I found it very useful, but it only offers a translation tool by segments for HTML pages, and since I work with Trados, I don't use this function.
If you're looking for a tool that will assist you in HTML translations ONLY, you can give it a try (they have a demo version, don't they?).

Hello everyone! I find Glossy a very useful tool to translate webpages. Though something inexplicable has happened - the Glossy toolbar has dissappeared from my MS Word ;-( Does anyone, who uses the tool, know how to fix it?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Katya

Glossy tool Sep 17, 2004

I tryed out Glossy for a few hours, importing txt formatted terminology. It works good in highlighting all terms that are present in your translation work; you can then replace these terms on the fly. However, Glossy has problems recognizing longer terms (more than 4 words together), at least in the current version. If this is all you want, then look out for new version updates;

If Glossy would recognize large sentences instead of 2-4 words in a row, it could be considered as a CAT-Tool, having some translation memory: the program is able to set a "similarity" value for term ricognition from 70-100%.

For serious translation work, I would rather prefer a low-budget CAT-tool like MetaTexis or Fusion. These programs have a good price/feature relation.
Hope that this will help you.
