'reifen'

English translation: "vor allem"--especially

German term or phrase: 'reifen'
Fahrkupplung und Getriebe 'reifen' zu sehr (v. a. 6 Gang)
I know that 'reifen' can mean to mature but that wouldn't be used about clutches or gears. The German author has used inverted commas as shown. Also, I don't know what v. a. is supposed to stand for but presume that this relates to the 'reifen' issue. Any ideas?

English translation:"vor allem"--especially
Explanation:
v.a. is the abbreviation for "vor allem" (meaning besonders)--especially in the 6th gear (Muret-Sanders)
"reifen" could mean wear and tear, but anyone I ask around here
never heard of this expression either--they would say "reissen"--also
wear and tear.--nothing about this part of your question in dictionaries either.

reiben

Explanation:
Not sure, but it could be a regional expression for 'reiben' meaning to rub, cause friction.

have friction, rub

Explanation:
v.a. = vor allem, especially

I looked on Northern Light and found nothing that would be the right meaning for reifen, also Ernst didn't have anything right. My strong suspicion is that it is dialect or a typo for reiben.

Explanation:
just a thought:

Is the farmer's description handwritten? Because if so, what you read as "reifen" could be "reissen" spelt with the special letter for "ss". In handwriting this letter may have a "tail" below the line.
