翻译文本 - English英语 Alchemy (الكيمياء or al-kimia in Arabic) is an ancient proto-scientific practice and a philosophical discipline that combines elements of chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, semiotics, mysticism, spiritualism, art, and magic. Through a complex network of schools of thought and philosophical systems that spanned at least 2,500 years, alchemy was practised in Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persia, India, China, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the Islamic Empire, and Europe until the nineteenth century.
Throughout a series of “desperately complicated” processes, alchemy would attempt to transform common metals such as iron into pure gold and create an extraordinarily powerful catalyst that, combined with base metals, would transmute them into gold – King Midas’ style. The catalyst, known as the Philosopher’s Stone, would also create an elixir that could heal any injury and confer eternal life.
The making of the Stone appeared to be a long and difficult process. First, alchemists extracted raw material from the depths of the earth. Next, they proceeded to liquefy the material; vaporize unnecessary water to obtain a viscous liquid; separate and purify each element of the material; and reunite these elements or pure “spirits” to form the Philosopher’s Stone.
Just a few questions…
What if war broke out today?
What would be the purpose?
Would it be to prove that the right to invade is a privilege for superpowers and that Saddam cannot do to Kuwait what Bush did to Panama and Gorbachev did to Lithuania?
Would it be that Israel could continue to do to the Palestinians what Hitler did to the Jews?
Would it be to allow Arabs to pay for Arab slaughter?
Would it be to make it clear that oil is out of bounds?
Or would it be to keep on wasting two million dollars per day in weapons now that the Cold War has already ended?
Whether or not war breaks out one day, would the world explode and become a planet of arsenal and barracks?
Who sold our fate to a handful of lunatics, greedy people, and gangsters?
Who will survive to see that their crime was our suicide?
The Conseil québécois de la musique has paid tribute to a leading figure who has left a significant mark on musical life in Quebec. Monique Dubé, who has spent close to 35 years cultivating chamber music on Montreal stages, was the 2019 recipient of the 23rd Prix Opus Hommage.
Because Dubé’s father was a music director in the Irish community of Montreal’s Rosemont neighbourhood, Dubé first discovered music through sacred choral singing. Back in the day, there was no reason to expect that Dubé would be called on to play a key role in the concert music industry. Although she was interested in the arts at an early age, attending symphony orchestra concerts and shows at the Gesù, particularly shows featuring the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent, her love for chamber music became known during her tenure at Pro Musica.
After volunteering for many non-profit organizations, including the Quebec Lung Association, Dubé moved to the Pro Musica Society to organize fundraising events in the 1980s. In 1986, she became the general manager, replacing founder Gertrude Constant Gendreau, who had died a few years earlier.
While Dubé was at the helm of Pro Musica, she gave daily operations a professional character. Before graduate diplomas in management of cultural organizations came into existence, Dubé had to learn on the job, just like others before her. She learned everything from organizational administration to project management and computers. At that time, computers had just replaced typewriters.
Even though today’s young managers receive training and track progress through a sturdy framework, Dubé believed that specific components in the profession were easier in her time. “Competition was less cut-throat, especially in the chamber music industry,” she said. “Nowadays, the music supply has skyrocketed. One must continually vary repertoire and hold extra activities during concerts.” Today, as in the past, the challenge for chamber music lies in funding, an area Dubé is familiar with. “Because chamber music might be less appealing than repertoire for larger ensembles, more inward-looking and at times challenging for the listener, this musical genre struggles to find its way to sponsors and benefactors,” she said.
A good manager needs to be well surrounded. By recruiting Pierre Rolland, a familiar face in Quebec’s music industry, to the position of artistic director, the organization gained new momentum. From 1986 to 2011, Dubé and Rolland were outstanding team players, as Rolland’s bold artistic vision complemented Dubé’s efficient management skills. The teammates’ combined networks of professionals and friends allowed them to take stock of opportunities and benefit from talents that enhanced music in Quebec and overseas.

Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918)
Sonate pour violoncelle et piano L. 135
Prologue – Lent, sostenuto e molto risoluto
Eric WUBBELS (né à New York en 1980)
Claude Debussy (1862–1918)
Sonata for Cello and Piano , L. 135
Prologue: Lent, sostenuto e molto risoluto
Sérénade: Modérément animé
Finale: Animé, léger et nerveux
During the summer of 1915, Debussy composed the Sonata for Cello and Piano under difficult circumstances. The First World War was in full swing and Debussy was suffering from cancer, which had an adverse affect on his overall health. This physical distress, however, did not stop him from composing fantastical music that served as testament to his passion for commedia dell’arte harlequinades. Debussy wanted to return to traditional aesthetic forms, evoking the ancient masters Couperin and Rameau. The reference to these composers is present in the slow, majestic French overture that begins the Sonata for Cello and Piano. In the Prologue, the solo instrumentalist has ample space for expression while the pianist plays quiet chords. The second movement, Sérénade, brings out a capricious humour represented by various cello techniques, calling to mind the guitar or mandolin—instruments used for singing evening serenades. The Finale following the second movement is characterized by its sheer virtuosity, and steeped in the warm tones of Spain.
Eric Wubbels (born in New York, 1980)
Gretchen am Spinnrade
Eric Wubbels is a pianist and composer, and co-director of the Wet Ink Ensemble. Almost 200 years after the death of Schubert, author of the lied “Gretchen am Spinnrade” (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel, 1814), Wubbels recreated the same excerpt from Faust, a popular sixteenth-century German folk tale. The composition was written for cellist Mariel Roberts and was premiered on December 13, 2016, with the composer playing the piano. This work is for daring performers who aren’t afraid of stepping out of their comfort zones; it is a very physically demanding piece. Schubert conveyed a melancholic mood and a beautiful melody to express the despair Gretchen felt as she was spinning wool. There is no melancholy to be found in Wubbels’ recreation of the scene. Instead, Wubbels has written music characterized by urgently repeated and articulated notes or chords, and looped, obsessive motifs that evoke the wheel’s unceasing movement, symbolizing endless repetition. Such a passionate dialogue does not allow for much rest. Toward the end of the work, however, the rhythm suddenly slows down; the mood changes. We find ourselves in a strange and subdued sphere. The machine has worn itself out; the music calms down and softly dies. What is left after the wheel has stopped?
An extension of La Troupe, a collaborative mentoring and artistic community project founded by Artistic Director Christine Harel in 2009, QUAVARIA is a newly-formed vocal quartet on Montreal’s art scene. La Troupe assembled four classically-trained professional singers, Antoni Carlone, composer/arranger/pianist, and eight amateur singers. In March 2010, its first production, Tin Pan Alley, was performed in front of a sold-out audience of 400 concert goers. American popular music from the 1920s to the 1950s was featured in this concert.
In 2011, the four professional singers and pianist founded QUAVARIA after discovering an interesting team spirit and an unusual musical chemistry. The ensemble reinvigorated Tin Pan Alley with the addition of more jazz music and similar popular songs from the French repertoire.
Tin Pan Alley has already been performed on a few occasions, and it continues to evolve and adapt in different musical contexts.
In addition to the Tin Pan Alley project, QUAVARIA is currently producing a recording of vocal works by Quebec composer Michel Perrault, who died in February 2011.

Prion diseases are rare disorders that affect humans and some animals; these disorders are ultimately fatal. Although we can attribute prion diseases to various causes, the diseases, like infections, may be transmitted among individuals of the same or different species once they develop. Following the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic, a prion disease that affects cattle, prion diseases began to gain the population’s attention in the mid-1980s. Even though the roots of this disease remain unknown, we know that animal feed contaminated by cattle tissue, infected in turn by the BSE, played a role in the spread of the BSE epidemic.
In humans, the most well-known prion disease is the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). Each year, the disease affects approximately one in one million people – around 35 new cases in Canada per year. According to the disease’s aetiology, the CJD can be divided in three different sub-types: genetic, acquired, and sporadic. The unpredictable, sporadic CJD causes 90% of cases in Canada. At least 7% of prion diseases in Canada are the cause of genetic anomalies (mutations); thus, the diseases belong to the genetic prion category. Finally, a prion disease is acquired when it is transmitted among members of the same or different species. In Canada, some CJD cases have been associated with accidental transmission of infections during medical procedures. The CJD would then be considered as iatrogenic. The Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) is usually caused by exposure to foods contaminated by the BSE agent. This variant affects mainly younger people. A few cases have occurred in Canada; however, they are extremely rare.
