English to Maltese: Glosas Emilianenses General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: History
Source text - English In a church hewn out of a mountainside, just over a thousand years or so ago, a monk was struggling with a passage in Latin. He did what others like him have done, writing the tricky bits in his own language between the lines of text and at the edges. What makes these marginalia more than marginal is that they are considered the first words ever written in Spanish.
The “Emilian glosses” were written at the monastery of Suso in the La Rioja region of Spain. Known as la cuna del castellano, “the cradle of Castilian”, it is a UNESCO world heritage site and a great tourist draw. In 1977 Spain celebrated 1,000 years of the Spanish language there.
Everyone loves a superhero origin story. Spanish is now the world’s third-biggest language, with over 500m speakers, and it all began with a monk scrawling on his homework.
Translation - Maltese Madwar 1,000 sena ilu, ġewwa knisja mħaffra f’ġenb ta' muntanja, patri kien qed isibha bi tqila jifhem xi kitba bil-Latin. Għamel kif kienu jagħmlu oħrajn bħalu u, bejn linja u oħra u fil-ġnub tal-paġna, kiteb bl-ilsien tiegħu l-iktar partijiet li kienu qed iħabbtuh. Dak li jagħmel dawn in-noti miktuba fil-ġnub tal-paġni mhux tas-soltu huwa l-fatt li llum jitqiesu bħala l-ewwel kliem li nkitbu bl-Ispanjol.
Il-"Glosas Emilianenses" inkitbu fil-kunvent ta' Suso ġewwa r-reġjun Spanjol ta' Rioja. Dan il-kunvent magħruf bħala la cuna del castellano, "il-benniena tal-Kastellan", huwa meqjus bħala wirt kulturali dinji tal-UNESCO u huwa post imfittex ħafna mit-turisti. Fl-1977 kien il-post fejn Spanja ċċelebrat l-elf sena anniversarju mit-twelid tal-ilsien Spanjol.
Kulħadd iħobb l-istejjer ta' kif jitwieldu s-supereroj. L-ilsien Spanjol, mitkellem minn iktar minn 500 miljun persuna, illum huwa t-tielet l-ikbar ilsien fid-dinja u dan kollu beda minn patri li waqt il-ħidma tiegħu ħażżeż ftit kliem fuq ktieb.
