In March, the XXX (XXX) fell 14.9%, whilst underperforming its benchmark, the XXX Index. Underperformance this month was attributable to the performance of the Fund’s underlying stocks, whilst sector allocation was favourable. Since its inception in January 2008, the Fund’s NAV has decreased by 10.48%, net of fees, whilst the index has decreased by 5.11%.
March marked significant weakness in both commodities and commodity-related stocks. In US dollar terms, the spot prices of lead, zinc, nickel, aluminum, and copper fell by 16.2%, 15.3%, 5.5%, 3.7%, and 0.5%, respectively, on the back of rising inventories as more speculative positions were unwound. At the same time, precious metals fell from their record highs, with the spot price of gold falling $57.29, or 5.88%, to $916.88/oz. The spot price of silver fell 13.02% and the platinum spot price was 7.51% lower.
The price of crude oil continued to strengthen on the back of slowing supply growth. The XXXX price hovered above $100/bbl all month and climbed as high as $110.33/bbl on March 13; the month ended up flat against February, with the price at $101.58/bbl.
M&A activity in the natural resource sector in February was dominated by XXX’s bid for XXX, which was eventually withdrawn, at least temporarily, at the end of the month. Meanwhile, XXX completed the acquisition of XXX and XX completed the purchase of XXXX.
Commodity-related stocks posted significant losses, pushing the euro-adjusted XXX Index down 11.9% for the month. The losses were led primarily by mid and small cap companies, mainly in the Uranium and Zinc/Lead sectors.
Out/UnderPerformance
** XXX estimate, versus the XXX Index.
Sector allocation contributed outperformance for the Fund in March due to underweight positions to the Diversified Mining and Gold sectors as their indices fell 10.4% and 15.6%, respectively.
Conversely, some underperformance resulted from an overweight position to the Miscellaneous Base Metals sector as its index fell approximately 10.6%.
Stock selection contributed underperformance this month as XXX and XXX underperformed their sectors by 12.6 and 4 percentage points, respectively.
Some outperformance resulted from XXX as it outperformed its sector by 5.9 percentage points this month.
