However, it is important to note that mental health first aid principles in this manual can be usually applied to other health problems.
Mental illnesses are common in the Indian community. The National Mental Health Survey (NMHS 2016) found that the overall lifetime prevalence of mental illnesses of adults aged 18 years and above is 13.67%. The overall lifetime prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs), is found to be 12.3%, that strikes nearly 6 times higher when compared to lifetime prevalence of severe mental disorders (SMDs), which is 1.9%. Further, it is estimated that 1 in 20 people in India suffer from diagnosable depression.
