English to Khmer (Central): Overview of Diabetes General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Source text - English Diabetes is a silent epidemic that claims more lives each year than AIDS. In 2007, diabetes caused an estimated 3.5 million deaths across the world, according the World Diabetes Foundation.
Each year another 6 million people develop diabetes and the prevalence of the disease is growing faster in developing countries than in developed nations.
But in developing countries, many cases of diabetes are undiagnosed and untreated. In developing nations less than half of people with diabetes are diagnosed. Without timely diagnosis and adequate treatment, complications and deaths from diabetes rise exponentially.
In this issue we explain what diabetes what diabetes is, how it is caused and as health workers, how you can help treat and prevent it.
The diabetes epidemic consists primarily of type 2 diabetes and has occurred due to increased urbanization and rapid cultural change which leads to decreased physical activity and changes in diet.
In 1985 there were an estimated 30 million people with diabetes. Today diabetes affects more than 230 million people, almost 6% of the world’s adult population. The number of people living with diabetes is expected to grow to 350 million in less than 20 years if action is not taken.
Type 2 diabetes is responsible for 90-95% of diabetes cases, but 80% of type 2 diabetes cases are preventable by making changes to diet and increasing physical exercise.
English to Khmer (Central): Abortion and Family Planning in Cambodia General field: Medical
Source text - English Overview of Abortion and Family Planning in Cambodia
Abortion, whether spontaneous or induced, is next to childbirth the most common obstetric event in the world.
Last year more women of childbearing age died in Cambodia from pregnancy-related causes than from HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis put together. Nearly a third of these women are estimated to have died from unsafe abortion.
Current Situation of Abortion
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), of the 210 million pregnancies that occur each year, around 46 million worldwide end in induced abortions. Almost half of them are estimated to be unsafe. Nearly all unsafe abortions (97%) happen in developing countries and over half (55%) are in Asia.
More than 10 years after the adoption of the Abortion Law, access to abortion services is still very limited in Cambodia.
Many women risk their lives attempting to end their pregnancy themselves, seeking care at clinics run under unhygienic conditions by unskilled health workers or turning to traditional methods of unsafe abortion used by TBAs and traditional healers known as ‘Kru Khmer’, eg.:
- abdominal massage
- jumping
- oral herbal medication
- insertion of plant stems into vagina and cervix.

Bio
Born in 1979, a year zero of Cambodian history after the collapse of Pol Pot regime, I was brought up in an average family with both mum and dad being a doctor and nurse. With very limited access to learning resources, I have struggled to overcome my obstacles at school and managed to pursue further education at Faculty of Law and Economics (now known as Royal University of Law and Economics) with a diploma in banking and then at Build Bright University with a bachelor degree in finance and banking. To support my education at university, I had to work part-time as a teacher of English and did some freelance translation projects in Phnom Penh. I have continued my teaching and translation career up to present day with professional development trainings on teaching methodology and translation skills.
Now I am the founder and project manager of khmertrans. We provide a variety of language services to individuals and other overseas agencies for the language pair of English to Khmer or vice versa and some other languages. I am also a verified and certified member of Proz.com and a Master member of Translatorscafe.com.
With 17 years of translation experience, I have completed numerous translation and proofreading projects with different subject matters such as : education, health, IT, politics, contracts, certificates, letters, accounting, business, tourism and so on. I am familiar with both unicode and non-unicode Khmer fonts with different formats and styles. I can use different software applications as follows: MS Office, Acrobat professional, InDesign, QuarkExpress, SDLX and SDL Trados.
