Source text - Spanish Bogotá, 23 de marzo de 2008. — El Ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, dijo hoy que el General Gabriel Paris Gordillo, ex presidente de la Junta Militar que gobernó a Colombia catorce meses, es “el símbolo de la vocación democrática de la Fuerza Pública de Colombia”.
Santos encabezó los actos fúnebres realizados en la Escuela Militar de Cadetes y dijo que el país le rindió un justo homenaje al hombre que, hace 50 años, le devolvió su democracia. Era el último sobreviviente de la que el Ministro calificó de “junta histórica” al lado de los generales Luis Ernesto Ordoñez, Rafael Navas y Deogracias Fonseca y del Almirante Rubén Piedrahita.
El titular de la cartera de defensa dijo que la Fuerza Pública sigue combatiendo a los terroristas, con la el fusil en una mano y la Constitución en la otra, respetando Derechos Humanos y Derecho Internacional Humanitario.
Translation - English Bogotá, March 23, 2008 -- Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said today that General Gabriel Paris Gordillo, former president of the Military Junta that governed Colombia for fourteen months, is “the symbol of the democratic ideals of the Armed Forces of Colombia.”
Santos, leading funeral services at the Cadets’ Military School, stated that the nation pledges well-earned homage to the man who devoted 50 years to his commitment to Colombian democracy. The late general was the last survivor of what the Ministry called the “historic junta,” in which he served alongside generals Luis Ernesto Ordoñez, Rafael Navas and Deogracias Fonseca and Admiral Rubén Piedrahita.
The nation’s defense chief said that the Armed Forces continue to fight terrorists with a gun in one hand and the Constitution in the other, while respecting human rights and international humanitarian law.
