Bio

I started Rhyme&Reason in Patras in 2005. Somewhere along the way the technology became half the job, so in 2020 I set up RIMA Language_Tech_Culture to do that half properly; Rhyme&Reason is now its language services studio. We are a small team in Patras and Athens, working with specialist linguists across 90+ language combinations. Clients include the Alpha Bank Group, Sunlight Battery Systems and the Bioiatriki Healthcare Group.

I still translate: mostly EN–EL, mostly medical, technical, legal and banking, which is where a wrong word costs the most. Along the way, more than 35 published books, eleven specialised bilingual dictionaries as author, and the RIMA Lexicography series as editor. I also edit English-language academic journals. MSc Translation Studies, Edinburgh. Scottish mother, Greek father, so both languages came with the furniture.

How we work has a name, Expert-at-the-Core, but the idea is old-fashioned: in specialised work mistakes have consequences, so the person who knows the subject has the final word. We use machine translation and AI, inside rules we have written down: translation memories, termbases and a human reviewer sit above whatever the machine produces. I teach Translation Technologies at the University of Piraeus and chair Language_Tech Patras.

For outsourcers: our own termbases and translation memories, built and maintained in-house; Trados Studio, Phrase and our R.I.M.A. system; translation, MTPE (governed, not improvised), DTP and document reconstruction, LQA, terminology work, and interpreting (consecutive, simultaneous, RSI).
