proof/print Explanation: artist's proof - One of a small group of prints set aside from an edition for an artist's use; a number of printer's proofs are sometimes also done for a printer's use. An artist's proof is typically one of the first proofs from a limited edition of prints, for the artist's own copyright use, and marked as an A.P., and not numbered. Artist's proofs generally draw a higher price than other impressions. The equivalent in French is épreuve d'artiste, abbreviated E.A. cfr useful art glossary http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/Art.html The problem with the above definition is the number 95 Artist's Proof - intended for the artist's personal use. Usually ten percent or more of an edition is reserved as artist's proofs, and these are numbered AP 1/20 or EA 2/20 (for the French épreuve d'artist) on the lower left hand corner of the print. http://artcafe.net/artcenter/studio/printglossary.htm proof épreuve n. f. Déf. : Tirage d'essai obtenu soit par un procédé photographique, soit par un procédé d'impression, et destiné au contrôle du processus de reproduction des images. GDT in photography, however, print épreuve n. f. Déf. : ((...)) désigne le tirage positif sur papier. I hope this is not too confusing. Paola L M [Office de la langue française, 1982] |
