plane

As Piet Mondrian's painting 'Compositie met Kleurvlakken en Grijze Lijnen' is called 'Composition with Colour PLanes and Grey Lines', I think the term is clear.

A vlak is a surface area, but it may be square, rectangular, triangular etc. even round. So you can't give it a shape in its denomination. The word 'area' then does not evoke the right feeling as a 'vlak' should be flat and an 'area' is not always 'flat'.
Note from asker:
Thank you! I think this comes closest.
Peer comment(s):

agree Machteld/Johan Schrameijer/Westenburg : dit is het goede woord in dit verband

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : sounds good; Modern painting Warm planes http://www.bimago.co.uk/paintings/abstract-paintings/modern/... / And, yes, I don't see why it should be rectangular, etc.

part

If we could see a picture of the painting it could have helped, I think. 'Part' is like 'area' I have to admit: it does not sound right. But I agree with Kirsten, one cannot give it a shape.
