is rather pointless - we'd have to ask A.M., but the rest of the story seems to indicate the child was very tired. Where was the child, on the bed or somewhere else in the compartment? If it was not on the bed, it would have been more accurate to write "in the middle of the jump (into bed)...It is possible for tired children to do a lot of "jumping" - I wonder if Alice would be scratching her head by now if she saw the discussion?

I said it sounds strange - but then I did not write the story. And no I did not change my mind. " asleep in the very middle of a jump" => "so tired she went to jump and fell asleep in mid jump" - probably one of those children who goes on adrenaline and then finally crashes

We've established that the whole thing sounds strange... but the child falling asleep in the middle of a jump is exactly what you've given in your answer. Have you changed you mind?

that particular Alice Munro story, but I would read it as a jump of the train felt in the compartment - like you and Victoria did.

Katy (the child) has been playing, and now as she's tired, her mother (Greta) took her back to the compartment to sleep. I could see no mention of jumping, and actually she's too tired to jump around anymore.

It would be useful to know what comes just before - is there no mention of jumping? It sounds as though she has been being very active and they have felt it sensible to keep the window covered.
