German term

Duftrichtung

Klaus Urban (asker) Dec 31, 2009:
Thank you all for your input. Very helpful! Happy New Year!
Annett Kottek (X) Dec 30, 2009:
Perhaps 'fragrance family'? I'm sorry, I don't have time to do a thorough research, but this is what occurred to me. Maybe someone else can go with this.... See, for example, here: http://www.cleopatrasboudoir.com/glossaryofterms.htm
David Williams Dec 29, 2009:
Dem würde ich auch zustimmen 'note' ist mir auch bekannt
Bernd Runge Dec 29, 2009:
note Hallo Klaus. Nichts für ungut, aber ich glaube, dass note nicht falsch ist: with a spicy, sweet, fresh, juicy, fruity, cinnamon, honey, etc. note. Im direkten Zusammenhang mit fragrance häufig benutzt - auch neben top, heart, etc. notes.

off-topic comment My brother, the wine snob...errr, connoisseur, would call this the 'nose' of the wine. Maybe a definition of that might help.

type of fragrance

Perhaps? I.e. whether it tends more towards the sweet, spicy, honeyed, fruity, etc.

kind/ aroma of fragrance

Beides wäre möglich, da Fragrance allein nicht die "Richtung" angibt.

neutral Eleanore Strauss : kind is correct, aroma of fragrance is not

scent direction

Hallo!

Meine Recherche hat folgendes Ergeben. Wenn es sich um die Duftnote bei Parfüm handelt verwendet man im Englischen "scent direction". Wenn es sich jedoch um die Duftnote handelt verwendet man "particular type of scent/fragrance (Quelle: Pons, Größwörterbuch)
Example sentence:

Scent direction: floral - fruity - sensual. Exciting exotic blood orange with Cassis. Mystisch by wild plum and vanilla. And full of passion, thanks to cedar and white musk.

disagree David Williams : Erstaunlich! Mit Recherche kann man ja fast alles belegen!

neutral British Diana : Selbst wenn - es ist hier kein Parfüm, und es klingt in meinen Ohren etwas merkwürdig

type of fragrance

I have done extensive translations (G to E) for a company that sells scented candles, and am a bit of a perfume "junkie", so I have a fair amount of knowledge about how fragrances or scents are categorized. Scent direction would be an exact translation, but sounds a bit awkward. Type of fragrance is a better way to specify this. Often the word fragrance is simply used as the headline.
Example sentence:

The type of fragrance you use is very personal.

fragrance tendency

I would use "tendency" here to imply that a certain scent tends toward a certain marked fragrancy
Note from asker:
Danke!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Eleanore Strauss : tending in a direction is not the same as the clearly different fragrance types that are used to differentiate perfumes.
