Russian term

внешний облик

Russian to English Other Medical: Health Care
I am stumped here. The context is safety at playgrounds: Обратите внимание на внешний облик горок и игровых модулей. В идеале, должна быть древесная стружка, песок или резиновые коврики, чтобы смягчить удар, если ребенок упадет.

Discussion

Roman M Dec 17, 2011:
There's indeed no direct connection between the first and second sentences. It's probably the result of combining two bullet points into one or careless copy/paste.

Thank you, Ellen. I was thinking something like "exterior" but this is better.
This was tricky, but, Ellen, I went with your suggestion. Thank you very much. I didn't want to improve on/edit/interpret the translation since it was a back translation.

Russian term (edited): внешний облик

appearance

"внешний облик" - то же самое, что и "внешний вид".

Но по смыслу следующей фразы речь, скорее идет не о том, как выглядят эти предметы, а об их конструкции (design), о том, из каких частей они состоят.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Igor. I don't see the direct connection between the equipment itself and what lies beneath them. That's why I am confused by the use of внешний облик. The point made before this was to check the equipment for rust or rough places that could cause injury to skin. That, to me, seems more like внешний облик.

condition

I would say "Take note of the condition of slides and play structures."

Since they're asking you to literally pay attention to how the play structures look, they probably mean that you should examine their condition.

Here's a sentence from the playground safety tips posted on the website of some personal injury attorneys: "Examine the placement and condition of play structures."
