I guess the 笨拙的 throws me off here because 古人之风 is something positive while 笨拙的 has a negative connotation. However, I agree that 'gentleman' is better than 'forefather'.

In this case, I prefer using an equivalent English expression instead of sticking faithfully to the source text.

"... with the manner of a gentleman, hiding awkwardly..."
