janub جنوب

This is pronounced ja-noob. This is the basic noun. The South is aljanub الجنوب, but further usage will depend on your context. For example:

South Africa:
janub afriqiyah جنوب أفريقية

The South Pole:
alqutb aljanubi القطب الجنوبي
Here a ya "ي" is added turning the word into a masculine adjective because qutb is a virtual masculine

South America:
amrica aljanubiyyah أمريكا الحنوبية
Here "ya ta marbutah ية" is added, turning the word into a feminine adjective because amrica is a virtual feminine.
