Discussion

Ken Cox Oct 24, 2006:
By the way, the text could be regarded as an *example* of motor modification (although worded very poorly), but not a definition.
Ken Cox Oct 24, 2006:
Translating survey results is often a nightmare. Respondents have little interest in providing lucid answers, and clients seem to think translators can understand the answers without knowing the questions, so it's often 'garbage in, garbage out'.
GermanTransl (asker) Oct 24, 2006:
Again, this is what I was provided with. I do not understand why I am blamed for this (Please provide adequate context in a professional manner instead). It is in a survey, no further explanation given. If it were that easy, I would not have to ask.
Ken Cox Oct 24, 2006:
In this context, a motor motification would be any sort of change (electrical, physical, or mechanical) to an existing motor with the objective of making it better suited to a specific use.
Ken Cox Oct 24, 2006:
Sorry, but the text in your question is not a definition of 'motor modification', and if your client said it was, they do not understand the meaning of 'definition'. Stephen's suggested translation is a perfectly apt IMO.
GermanTransl (asker) Oct 24, 2006:
further clarification It is not a guessing game. This is what I was provided with. It relates to any type of electrical equipment that requires a motor in it. Not just computers. I gave a definition but need the translation of the term I asked for.
Ken Cox Oct 23, 2006:
The relationship to computers is far from obvious. As Stephen said, more context would probably help -- not to mention that the term you asked appears to be an interpretation of your source text.
Stephen Sadie Oct 23, 2006:
If this is supposed to be a guessing game, I don't wish to play. Please provide adequate context in a professional manner instead

agree Ken Cox : yep - that leaves the question of what the English is supposed to mean...

Motortuning

"Motortuning" wird im Deutschen (bzw. Denglischen) häufig für Modifikationen (gleich welcher Art) an Motoren gebraucht, allerdings wohl nur für Kraftfahrzeugmotoren.
Gelegentlich auch "Motorentuning".
Niedriger CL, da der Zusammenhang hier fehlt.

neutral Ken Cox : given the context of 'motors and gear-motors' (sic), vehicle engines seems unlikely. Anyhow, the English reads like a poor translation...

Yes, you're probably right.

explanation

Maybe this come from the following sentence:

The Avnet Motor Modification Center in Dallas, Texas provides motors and gear-motors with the ability to make mechanical, physical and electrical modifications.

on the following website:

http://www.em.avnet.com/sta/home/0,4610,RID%3D0%26CID%3D3182...

In any case, it's garbage English, and whoever wrote it badly needs a course in writing simple, clear English.

Given the content of the website, the intended meaning is (take your pick);

The MMC supplies motors and can also supply motors with custom modifications

or

The MMC center enables Avnet to make custom modifications to motors.

I'm sure you can handle the translation.

s.u.

Ganzer Satz:
Das Zentrum liefert Motoren und Getriebemotoren und ist in der Lage, daran mechanische und elektrische Änderungen vorzunehmen.

"Physical" hat zwei Bedeutungen:
"physikalische", d.h. chemische, elektrische, mechanische usw.
"physische", d.h. körperliche, d.h. mechanische
