In typography, kerning refers to adjusting the space between characters, especially by placing two characters closer together than normal. Only the most sophisticated word processors and desktop publishing systems perform kerning. Normally, you can activate or deactivate kerning for particular fonts.

In Spanish, most professional publishers use the English jargon kernel. However you may use interletrado o interletraje depending wether you translate for Spain or South America

kerning is the space between characters and Microsoft has translated them literally into Spanish. Accent on the secon "a" of caracteres.
