Discussion

Gary D Sep 23, 2009:
What about THE promotion - What about the promotion - best describes why you did not make a purchase today... I used a pause as we ask; what about the promotion? ---- and why didn't you make a purchase? Speaking naturally, I take a breath pause there, to emphasize or stress the point that I believed the promotion was the main cause of you not purchasing today.. Just being a native speaker and putting the stress in the sentence of How I would ask it.
What aspect of XXX is certainly the right approach. It is an odd question with promotion, but certainly possible. To me it seems more likely you would say: what aspect of the offer/product/service best describes why you did not...
Andrew Mason Sep 23, 2009:
Henry, I would have no trouble interpreting the phrase as I said. It is, doubtless, a little short on grammar, but the world is not perfect.
Mark Chen (asker) Sep 23, 2009:
What is your suggestion, Henry?
No, it is not correct, and even a correct version, like Andrew's, would be odd.

What was it about the promotion that made you decide not to make a purchase...

an idea (leaving out the best but it could be fit in)...What was it about the promotion that made you decide not to make a purchase in / from our (company) website?

agree Gary D : What about the promotion - best describes why you did not make a purchase today. Agreed with the comma, If I was speaking I would have a pause (take a breath) there, maybe not enough for a comma.

agree Armorel Young : That makes good sense of it - but I can't endorse Gary's comma usage.

Thanks Armorel. Gary's comma might have been a typo. We all answer very quickly!

Whqat characteristics/elements

I believe this is asking what characteristics of the promotion prevented you or dissuaded you from making a purchase
Peer comment(s):

agree Henry Whittlesey Schroeder : Andrew, I agree with you, this is the right way of phrasing it, if "promotion" is really meant, my idea was that a machine translation somehow got the word wrong in translating it from, say, Chinese, but if that is not the case, you are certainly right.
