It's a bit odd this "interasse" business in the context. Maybe you could gloss it (see my suggestion). Centredistance is certainly technically correct, but it sounds like overkill for a plastic laminate motif.

"space between centres"
This refers to the distance between the centre points of each square which, presumably but not necessarily, means each square measures 3 cm. in width. They could actually be, say, 2 cm. but have a 1 cm. of space between them to fill the gap.

I'd go with Golub's second choice -- I have always seen it translated that way. In any event, it means the distance from the center of one piece to the center of another.
