Finnish term

vikuintiassa

Finnish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello,

In a feedback questionnaire for an industrial machinery company, one of the respondents stated that the warehouse containing basic parts was located "jossakin vikuintiassa".

Is anyone familiar with this expression?

I have a suspicion as to what it might mean, but I'd like confirmation from a native or otherwise fluent speaker.

Thanks

backwoods

The correct spelling form should be "vinkuintiassa" in your example text.
This is a mildly derogative term in Finnish used to express 'a far away place that is of inferior standing', cf. e.g. https://urbaanisanakirja.com/word/vinkuintia/ for an explanatory definition in Finnish.

The target term provided is just an example of many possible alternatives.
Note from asker:
Thanks! My initial thought was that the term referred to a "faraway place", but "backwoods" is a bit more specific than that.

agree Spencer Allman : backwater

agree Jussi Rosti : Please note that this does not relate just to any "backwater", it has a strong connotation of developing countries and comes etymologically from "India".

agree finnword1 : halveksuvaa slangia, jonka voi vapaasti kääntää itse haluamallaan tavalla, vaikkapa "in the middle of nowhere". Urbaanisanakirjassa on hyvä määritelmä: "jossakin aivan helevetin kaukana oleva maa josta ei oo oikein mitään iloa kenellekkään"
