French term

tanguer par force dix

Pitching at force ten? Does that mean anything? Is it a maritime metaphor?

Pitch and roll

"as if he were clinging on for dear life in a force 10 gale"

Yes, I know that's getting rather a long way from the original, but it just conveyed the kind of feeling I got from it.

Thanks, CJ!
agree Karen Tucker (X) : Could you also say: "in gale-force winds" to be less technical?

Thanks Karen -- you COULD, indeed, but I think Froce 10 isn't so much meant to be technical as graphic
agree Jim Collis : Technical point: a gale is Force 8; Force 10 is a storm

Thanks, Jim --- of course you're right technically, but I feel that 'Gale' is more graphic than just 'storm', even though Beaufort saw it the other way!
agree Christopher Crockett : "A Main-Day Breeze."
