French term
tanguer par force dix
French to English
Art/Literary
"Un quart d’heure durant, j’ai eu un ton cassant en reprenant ses fautes de français. J’ai arrêté parce que j’ai vu ses yeux s’embuer et ses jointures exsangues serrer la table comme si le café eût tangué par force dix."
Pitching at force ten? Does that mean anything? Is it a maritime metaphor?

Yes, I know that's getting rather a long way from the original, but it just conveyed the kind of feeling I got from it.

: Could you also say: "in gale-force winds" to be less technical?

Thanks Karen -- you COULD, indeed, but I think Froce 10 isn't so much meant to be technical as graphic

: Technical point: a gale is Force 8; Force 10 is a storm

Thanks, Jim --- of course you're right technically, but I feel that 'Gale' is more graphic than just 'storm', even though Beaufort saw it the other way!
