Source text - Greek Το φαινόμενο το νιώθουμε όλοι το καλοκαίρι - πυρακτωμένη άσφαλτος στο κέντρο της πόλης, αφόρητη ζέστη ακόμα και το βράδυ, υψηλότερες θερμοκρασίες. Κι όμως, υπάρχουν λύσεις και μάλιστα απόλυτα εφικτές: φύτευση ακόμα και του πιο μικρού τμήματος που δεν έχει καλύψει το τσιμέντο στην πόλη και αντικατάσταση των υλικών που απορροφούν τη θερμότητα. Αρκεί να υπάρχει πολιτική βούληση.
Το θερμόμετρο χτυπάει κόκκινο σε γειτονιές με πυκνή δόμηση, ακατάλληλα υλικά και ελάχιστο πράσινο. Δεν προξενεί έκπληξη, λοιπόν, η επιστημονική καταγραφή του φαινομένου στην Aθήνα και σε άλλες ελληνικές πόλεις. Δεν προκαλεί έκπληξη ούτε η παντελής έλλειψη πολιτικής παρέμβασης από το ελληνικό κράτος. Oι συντελεστές δόμησης ολοένα αυξάνονται, η δεντροφύτευση και η κάλυψη των περιορισμένων αδόμητων δημόσιων και ιδιωτικών χώρων με κατάλληλο πράσινο επαφίενται στην ιδιωτική πρωτοβουλία, τα «ψυχρά» υλικά δόμησης (πολλά από τα οποία είναι ελληνικής προέλευσης) αγνοούνται, ενώ σχεδόν όλα τα κτίρια μοιάζουν με τρύπια ενεργοβόρα βαρέλια, που αδυνατούν να διατηρήσουν μια ικανοποιητική θερμοκρασία. Παρ' όλα αυτά, οι «θερμικές νησίδες» όπως και άλλα θέματα οικιστικής ανάπτυξης, αφήνονται στον αυτόματο πιλότο…
Πρόκειται για «εγκληματική αμέλεια του κράτους και των πολιτικών», υπογραμμίζει ο κ. Xρήστος Zερεφός, καθηγητής στο Γεωλογικό Tμήμα του Πανεπιστημίου Aθηνών. «Τώρα που βρισκόμαστε σε ένα ενεργειακό σταυροδρόμι, δεν μπορεί να μη βλέπουμε διαφορετικά όλο το πλέγμα που έχει να κάνει με την κατανάλωση ενέργειας».
Translation - English It is a phenomenon that we all feel during the summer – red-hot tarmac in the city centre, intolerable heat even at night, ever higher temperatures. And yet, there are solutions and fully attainable ones at that: planting in even the smallest section of the city that has not been covered by cement, and replacing materials that absorb heat. What is needed is some political will.
The thermometer hits red in built-up neighbourhoods where unsuitable materials have been used and where there is a lack of vegetation. It is not surprising, therefore, that there has been a scientific recording of the phenomenon in Athens and other Greek cities. Nor does it come as a surprise that there has been a complete lack of political intervention by the Greek government. Factors to be considered in construction are ever increasing, while tree planting and the covering of confined, unstructured public and private spaces with appropriate vegetation rely on a private initiative. Furthermore, “cooling” construction materials (many of which are of Greek origin) are ignored, while nearly all buildings look like energy-guzzling, leaking buckets which are incapable of maintaining a satisfactory temperature. Despite all this, the "heat islands", much like other urban development issues, are left on automatic pilot…
It is a case of “criminal negligence on the part of the state and of politicians”, stresses Professor Christos Zerefos of the University of Athens Department of Geology. “Now that we find ourselves at a crossroads where energy is concerned, we have to take a look at the overall situation regarding its consumption”.
