Not only was this our first ever runway show for a Resort collection, it was also the first time we showed abroad.

Why China? Well, G touched on it a little earlier, but in a nutshell, our Chinese clientele is really our biggest client group worldwide. So it was natural, and appropriate, for us to go and hold our first runway show in China for just this audience.

So, what story is this collection telling? It’s a homage to Chinese cinema and its strong female characters. Traditional Chinese cultural references run through the designs, but reinterpreted through the prism of XXXX. There’s all the romance and femininity you’d expect, underpinned by the familiar design signatures we build on season after season. Now I’m going to show you some of the key looks that were big hits in the showroom.

First of all, let’s look at the Chinese influences. Here in this first selection of looks, we’ve got quilted jackets, silk jackets embroidered with very decorative floral patterns, jacquard – this silk one features a palm tree, and delicate flou silhouettes based around the pyjama. The pyjama shape is the basis for our new tailored suits this season.

Closer inspection reveals a continuous play of light on the movement, which was devised by Manufacture artisans and had some of its components redesigned by XXXX. It is worked in a very contemporary-looking matte satin-brushed finish, with a number of shiny areas that are thrown into brilliant relief by the light streaming through the crystal.

A brand new design for the balance wheel features grooves with matte tooth surfaces and shiny hollows: as it rotates back and forth it creates a beautiful pattern of remarkable subtlety, reflecting the sun’s rays in a stunning display. Another mobile part of the movement, the membrane, is adorned with the same play of contrasting finishes – shiny depths, set off by a matte exterior.

Sisley settled in Marly-le-Roi in the spring of 1875 and stayed for three years, so he was there to witness the great floods of 1876.

He had already painted floods several times, at Louveciennes and at Hampton Court in England, but in Marly he was able to devote more time to the subject and painted six canvasses.

A masterpiece of Impressionism, the Rouen painting depicts a wine merchant's house, À St Nicolas, resting on the encroaching flood waters of the Seine as if on a mirrored surface.

The house is being used as a landing stage and a gangway has been improvised to connect it to the town. The building forms the last solid edge impinging on the waters: a fascinating subject for an artist bent on exploring light and reflections.

As always with Sisley, the composition is tightly structured with horizontal and vertical elements framing different parts of the landscape. The building's mass in the middle works with the flat area of water stretching from the foreground to the horizon to give an effect of perspective that the 17th century Dutch Masters would have been proud of.

Sisley's extremely delicate touch with colour enables him to create a scene at once very nuanced yet full of contrasts, while the breadth of the brushwork is not detrimental to the painting's form – a point which differentiates him fundamentally from Monet.

Bio

Ask me what I do for a living, and I’m only half joking when I reply: ‘I sell dreams.’

As a translator and transcreator, I render the marketing texts of prestigious French and Swiss brands into an English that kindles desire and interest in their luxury, cultural, lifestyle, and travel products.

As a copywriter, I inject storytelling zest into brand content, corporate communications, content marketing, ad campaigns, slogans, and the like. ‘What’s the angle?’ is always my first question, so I can deliver work that’s fresh, highly readable, and really captures its audience.

I've been official translator for state-of-the-art Musée des Confluences in Lyon – ‘telling the story of humankind’ – and for French regional tourism and economic development agency, Vaucluse Provence Attractivité.

My clients include fashion & lifestyle magazines, hotel groups, high-end jewellers, fragrance houses & leather goods makers, and more. A number of agencies call me first when they need a winning test piece for new business pitches.

I offer proofreading and revision, as well as tutoring for translators who want to up their game and develop a more creative style.
