Labour Day is celebrated around the world on the 1st of May. Historically, Labour Day is a day to commemorate the economic and social achievements of workers, notably the establishment of 8-hour work days. Labour laws in the past were substandard and workers in the 1800s started coming together to push for fairer treatment in the workplace.
Since we last celebrated Labour Day on May 1st 2013, the unemployment rate of Malaysia has further improved to an all-time low of 3.2% and is still one of the lowest in the world. Malaysia is what it is today because our workers demand fair pay, decent hours, safe working conditions, and the dignity of a secure retirement.
The government has taken note of the growing needs of a budding workforce and has worked towards increasing standard of living of Malaysians by introducing a minimum wage for all workers; and raising the minimum retirement age to 60 years to retain a larger number of local knowledge workers and pave the way for higher productivity.
As Malaysia experiences positives changes in our stages of development which include rural-to-urban migration; a shift from low productivity agriculture to higher productivity manufacturing, and then on to services, the government is committed to improving our workplace for all Malaysians, regardless of rank, status, race and political standing.
In keeping the rakyat in mind, the government is committed to modernising Malaysian labour laws in line with the needs of a high-income economy. The Government is also currently reviewing the Industrial Relations Act 1967 in an effort to allow more efficient resolutions for unfair dismissals and trade disputes, ensure effective enforcement of Industrial Court awards; and balance business needs and employees' rights through conciliation.
The Employment Act 1955 is also under review to ensure the law is in line with emerging needs of local and foreign employers, as well as with the needs of an industrialising nation's workforce. Any amendments to the law are aimed at spurring productivity and efficiency, increasing income levels and protecting employees to support local, regional and global competitiveness.

Hari Pekerja disambut di seluruh dunia pada tanggal 1 Mei. Mengikut sejarah, sambutan Hari Pekerja diadakan bagi memperingati pencapaian masyarakat dan ekonomi pekerja terutamanya penubuhan 8 jam waktu bekerja. Undang-undang buruh pada masa lalu adalah substandard dan pekerja pada tahun 1800-an bersatu memperjuangkan layanan yang lebih adil di tempat kerja.
Sejak kita menyambut Hari Buruh pada 1hb Mei 2013, kadar pengangguran Malaysia telah diperbaiki ke satu tahap yang paling rendah iaitu 3.2% dan ini masih salah satu kadar terendah di dunia. Malaysia ialah seperti hari ini kerana pekerja kita menuntut gaji yang berpatutan, waktu kerja yang berpadanan, kondisi kerja selamat dan hak persaraan yang terjamin.
Kerajaan telah mengambi kira keperluan peningkatan tenaga kerja yang berkembang dan telah berusaha meningkatkan taraf hidup rakyat Malaysia dengan memperkenalkan satu skim gaji minima untuk semua pekerja. Selain itu, umur bersara minima ditingkatkan kepada 60 tahun supaya dapat mengekalkan sebilangan besar pekerja tempatan yang berpengetahuan dan ini turut membuka ruang untuk produktiviti yang lebih tinggi.
Perubahan positif yang dialami Malaysia ialah dalam peringkat pembangunan termasuk penghijrahan luar bandar ke bandar. Ini merupakan satu anjakan dari pertanian produktiviti rendah ke pembuatan produktiviti lebih tinggi sehingga ke bidang perkhidmatan. Kerajaan komited untuk meningkatkan kualiti tempat kerja untuk semua rakyat, tanpa mengira pangkat, status, kaum dan kedudukan politik.
Kerajaan komited untuk memodenkan undang-undang buruh Malaysia seiring dengan keperluan sebuah ekonomi berpendapatan tinggi demi memikirkan kehendak rakyat. Akta Perhubungan Perusahaan 1967 juga disemak dalam usaha membenarkan resolusi yang lebih cekap bagi pembuangan tak adil dan pertikaian perusahaan. Tambahan lagi, kerajaan turut memastikan cara yang berkesan bagi penguatkuasaan anugerah Mahkamah Perusahaan, keperluan perniagaan yang seimbang dan hak kakitangan melalui pendamaian.
Akta Pekerjaan 1955 turut dikaji semula bagi memastikan undang-undang seiring dengan keperluan setempat dan majikan asing seperti keperluan tenaga kerja satu negara perindustrian. Sebarang pindaan undang-undang adalah bertujuan untuk mendorong produktiviti dan kecekapan, meningkatkan kadar pendapatan dan melindungi kakitangan bagi menyokong persaingan tempatan, daerah dan global.
