English to Malay: Economy Grows Nearly 1% in Europe General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Economics
Source text - English With France and Germany leading the way, the economy in the 12 nations that use the Euro currency grew at its fastest quarterly rate since 2000, a development that is expected to fortify the resolve of the European Central Bank to raise interest rates again in this year.
The German economy, where households have been the most tightfisted, also grew 0.9 percent. "Domestic demand is doing its job, finally,"said Erik Nelsen, chief Europe economist with Goldman Sachs. "We finally have a little drive from something other than exports, which is good."
The data broadly confirmed figures released by various countries over much of the last week, most recently France on Friday.Though overall growth is accelerating in the Euro region, it is uneven, with France growing at a rate of 1.1 percent to 1.2 in the quarter, and Italy lagging at 0.5 percent.
The precise details of the growth pattern are not yet available, but economics said that data on retail sales in Germany points toward strong consumption, as does a fall in unemployment. Business confidence surveys, though they have come off their peaks of earlier this year, are still in line with strong growth.

Source text - English After all, I was young, I was vain, I had curvaceous figure and i was making fashion statements like all the girls my age, at the time. Among the photos my mother had taken without my knowledge was those of me and my ex-boyfriend. I had thought I would settle down with him for we were very much in love.
There were snap shots of us during my birthday party. Those pictures were taken in my own home. Unfortunately, we had broken up much later. I kept those pictures to remind me of my young love, fond memories that were not for sale. I had never in my wildest dream thought that one day these pictures would be out for public viewing. It was a private matter and not for anyone else to despoil or speculate upon.
Other photos taken by my mother showed me in my bath towel (berkemban), snapped as a lark by my sister at the time. It depicted innocent and lovely times with my sibling who was staying with me, and we were fooling around with the camera, taking silly, candid shots around the house. Such pictures were certainly not meant for public consumption and they were safely tucked into my private album... or so I thought.
Demikianlah apa saya fikirkan. |
English to Malay: How can social media change how development is done
Source text - English From journalism to business, social media are changing how institutions engage citizens. But what effect will this have on development?
How can social media platforms such as Facebook change hoe development research is shared and used? 28 January 2011, in response to growing public protests - and fearing mass uprising as had just happened in Tunisia - the government of then president, Hosni Mubarak, followed the example of Burma, and a few others before it, and disabled internet and mobile phone networks. Why? To prevent people from accessing social media.
Jilian York at Harvard university's Berkman Center for internet and Society said inan interview at the time:" Clearly, what's rattled the government is the major role that social media has played in the protests rocking the country's cities, including Cairo. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and even Google Docs have been used in unprecedented ways this time around - both for coordination, and for disseminatingnews", By 11 February 2011, Hosni Mubarak had resigned and observers began to speak of a "Twitter revolution". | Translation - Malay jhjh |

English to Malay: For underwater photographer David Doubilet, there is one thing even more precious than light.
Source text - English in the clear waters of the Galapagos islands, the sunlight plays on a group of sea-lions frolicking above the bright white sand. Under water photographer David Doubilet graphically describes their actions as " a dance in a weightless studio" performed for his benefit. " They're fooling around-showing off their superiority underwater - and playing with the most valuable thing a diver has: time." Doubilet should know; in order to capture the perfect shot, he is prepared to submerge himself for hours on end. Under such exacting conditions, he never entrusts the measurement of time to anything less than his Rolex Submariner chronometer. For David Doubilet, any 'fooling around' underwater is strictly for the sea-lions. | Translation - Malay hjjh |
English to Malay: Report OfThe Secretary Of The Air Force
Source text - English After September 11, 2001, the words "clear and present danger" acquired a new meaning for America and its allies. This nation's safety and security are at risk, both here and abroad. We are facing an unprecedented array of asymmetric threats from terrorists and rogue nations, potentially with access to weapons of mass destruction. We are fighting wars - and endeavoring to win the peace - in Iraq and Afghanistan, and responding to critical missions at flashpoints around the globe. We are poised to defend America's interests wherever threatened.
The Global War on Terror has forced us to rethink the nature of military force as well as the infrastructure that is designed to support multiple war fighter missions. In this era of uncertainty, a key challenge for the United States as a worldwide power is that it must be prepared to contend with a broad array of threats and operational contingencies in a war without clearly defined rules of engagement. | Translation - Malay gdgdghv |

Source text - English Campbell Soups languished on English shelves too. The trouble was the Campbell Soup cans looked so small next to the English cans selling for the same price. In England, soup is solid with the water already added.
Also culturally ignorant was the aircraft company that used ads in India picturing Pakistanis. Americans may not be able to tell the difference, Ricks said, but Indians can.
Or the firm that tried selling refrigerators to the mostly Moslem Middle East with an ad picturing their appliance chock full of food - including a giant ham on the middle shelf.
Colors are culturally significant, too, noted Ricks. Green is the color
of disease in Africa and white the color of death in Japan. | Translation - Malay jghg |
