WELCOME TO ASTURIAS
Asturias (Oviedo) airport is the gateway to a region of stunning scenery, splendid beaches, unspoilt nature and a rich architectural, industrial and cultural heritage. The region’s beaches are uncrowded, and inland there are lively cities and areas of great natural beauty.
THE REGION
Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias, is a lively university town and has been one of northern Spain’s most important industrial cities since the 19th century, thanks to nearby coal mines. In and around the city are relics of earlier eras, including many pre-Romanesque churches and other buildings dating from the 8th to the 10th centuries, when Asturias was one of the few regions of Christian Spain to remain unconquered by the Moors who occupied most of the rest of the Iberian peninsula. The region’s three major cities – Oviedo, Aviles and Gijon – are all within 20 kms of each other and less than an hour’s drive from the airport, which is also close to the region’s Atlantic beaches.The region was a cradle of prehistoric civilisation, and remarkable cave paintings may be seen at the Cueva de Tito Bustillo in Ribadesella.
Almost one third of the region has been designated as a region of outstanding natural beauty, and four nature reserves have been given UNESCO Biosphere status.
There are comfortable three and four star hotels in Oviedo, Aviles and Gijon, as well as good quality hotels close to the region’s best beaches and numerous small and friendly, family run guesthouses and pensiones in the countryside.

Las playas de la región tienen poca gente; y tierra adentro hay ciudades muy animadas y áreas de una extraordinaria belleza natural.
LA REGIÓN
Oviedo, la capital del Principado de Asturias, es una ciudad universitaria muy viva, y ha sido una de las ciudades industriales más importantes del norte de España, desde el siglo XIX, gracias a las cercanas minas de carbón. Dentro y alrededor de la ciudad existen reliquias de épocas antiguas, incluyendo iglesias prerrománicas y otros edificios que datan de los siglos VIII y X, cuando Asturias era una de las pocas regiones de la España cristiana que permaneció sin ser conquistada por los moros, quienes ocuparon la mayoría del resto de la península Ibérica. Las tres ciudades principales de la región — Oviedo, Avilés y Gijón — están dentro de los 20 Km. de distancia entre sí, y a menos de una hora de distancia del aeropuerto, el cual también está cerca de la región de las playas del Atlántico. La región fue la cuna de la civilización prehistórica, y en la Cueva de Tito Bustillo en Ribadesella, pueden verse las pinturas rupestres.
Casi un tercio de la región ha sido designada como una región de belleza natural extraordinaria, y a cuatro reservas naturales se les ha otorgado el estado de Biósfera por la UNESCO.
