Oil spills are notoriously hard to clean up, especially when they happen in salty water. But thanks to people like Paul Stamets, Trad Cotter and Levon Durr, among many others, we now know that Oyster Mushrooms of the genus Pleurotus are able to nom nom all that sticky icky oil away.
How we trained this organism to clean up our mess is best described by detailing Trad Cotter’s experiment.
By exposing Oyster mushroom mycelium to a 5% concentration of
motor oil, then selecting the parts of the mycelium that survived
and gradually increasing the oil concentration (i.e 10%, then 15%, and on and on), Cotter was able to hit a nearly 100% motor oil concentration while still keeping the mycelium going strong.
