English term

perpendicular / plumb

English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
sensor installation in safety applications

I thought perpendicular and plumb were near-synonyms, but here I need to underline the difference between the two:

Mechanical alignment of the Emitter(s) and Receiver(s) must be performed first before optically aligning them (i.e. perpendicular to the reference plane or floor along the path of the beams, and plumb in all possible directions).

I think that perpendicular means that it forms a right angle with the floor and plumb means it is perfectly vertical with respect to gravity force... right?

perpendicular = right angle to a plane/line plumb - perfectly vertical

vertical and perpendicular can be synonyms when measured to a plane - the ground or floor- that is perfectly horizontal

agree Tony M : Yes, the point here is that the in first part, it means 'at right-angles to a plane' (that MAY NOT NECESSARILY be a horizontal one)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks to both of you! I chose this answer as it mentioned the possibility that in certain cases the two terms can be synonyms - as a matter of fact I had translated plumb with perpendicular up to that sentence. Thanks again!!"

right

perpendicular means 90 degrees angle
plumb yarn (plummet bob) is used to proof the verticality with respect to gravity force
Peer comment(s):

agree HalmoforBT : You are right but Ruxi is not correct; 90 degrees = right angle; perpendicular = including 90 degrees relative to a line or a plane
