Yes John; the nuance here is that (I believe) it is most probably not the self-feeling of guilt what the original text refers to but the social stigmatization of patients-with-this-syndrome or of the-syndrome-itself (it does not matter how you put it).

"de la enfermedad misma" or the "la persona misma". It seems irrelevant to me which one you want to take. If I break my wrist, if I have a minimal concept of responsibility, I would take care of it, one way or another. I will not self-flagellate for it, but certainly I could blame myself for allowing that to happen. Yet, once handled, get a life and keep going... If instead of "el síndrome" the author wrote "la enfermedad" it would be more coherent, and less "obscure", to say the least. :-)

It's true that the object of desculpabilizar — that which is exonerated or freed from blame — can be either a person or a type of behaviour. However, it's difficult to see what "de la misma" could refer to apart from "la persona", though admittedly writers do sometimes lose track of which noun they're referring to.

Not sure how to express this in English but "desculpabilización de la misma" refers to the burnout syndrome itself.
It states that as long as no personal attribution is made (meaning that the burnout syndrome has not been related to any personal weakness, mental problem or a particular personality trait) the syndrome itself is neither (socially) stigmatizing nor a guilt-inducing syndrome; there are certain mental problems, such as anxiety disorders or alcoholism por example, where society puts a sort of burden-of-guilt on the patient. It is not that the patient feels guilty but that it is assumed socially that certain mental problems occur "because of the patient".
In the burnout syndrome this guilt-burden does not happen -partly, as explained in the text, because this syndrome has not been related to any personal characteristic of the patient but just on his labor context.

Aunque en el fondo da igual que la misma se refiera a la persona o a la enfermedad, ya que el sentido último es equivalente. La idea es precisamente que la ausencia de relación del síndrome con características personales permite su desculpabilización (tanto del paciente como del síndrome mismo).
