English term

adjust vs integrate

English Medical Other guidelines for genetic testing
Genetic testing again, same sentence I asked help with previously

***************

What do you think of

*adjust constructively to the outcome of those decisions ...*

vs

*the outcome of these choices must integrated in a non-destructive way*

*************

My translation of the whole paragraph is:

"Because of their profound reverberations, these decisions cannot be entrusted to test providers but should be made independently by clients. Indeed, non-directive counseling is essential to ensure that individuals or couples can adjust constructively – on a psychological and ethical level - to the outcome of those decisions, whichever it is."

*******************

I've been offered this word-by-word rendition on the IT>EN board:

"We are dealing with choices, which, due to their deep resonances, cannot be delegated to any professionals but, as an essential condition, require the person's full decision-making capacity, because the outcome of these choices - whatever they may be - must be integrated in a non-destructive way into the psychological and ethical make-up/profile of the individual or the couple."

******************

This is the ST:

"Si tratta di scelte che, per le loro risonanze profonde, non possono essere delegate ad alcuna figura professionale e richiedono la piena autonomia decisionale, come condizione essenziale perché l’esito di tali scelte – quale che sia - **venga integrato** in modo non distruttivo nel **mondo psicologico ed etico** dell’individuo o della coppia."

Thanks ;-)

as a general rule...

Use active verbs rather than passive.
Don't create a word that already exists by adding the prefix "non"... constructive -yes, non-destructive - no.

So I much prefer your version!

change vs combine

When translating psychological texts I usually use change/adaptation vs combine/organized.
