French term

phonie(s)

French to English Other
I need the exact term for the OBJECT itself. (In other words, "voice communication" provided by Eurodicautom will not work in the context of the document.)

The text refers to a network of "phonies VHF/HF"... and that all the branch offices have such "phonies".

I've already got that VHF/HF = very high frequency/high frequency. And know that it is some sort of radio transmitter/receiver (but not a CB according to the author).

Is there a more specific term? (Short wave radio or some such??)

Thanks!

Did a web search on VHF radio ** and all the sites

turned up VHF/UHF radio and simply stopped there. What follows is either irrelevant or varied. Is it possible we do not have a generic term that covers everything in the field as "phonies"? (I remember it took me quite a while to accept "telephony" - sounded too close to "phoney") but maybe you have to be particular in your context.

1 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you ALL for all your efforts... but since I have to chose a "winner", well I feel I should go with the one person who actually went looking for the name of the object/thing itself rather than the more general type of communication. I guess I'll have to stick to radio transmitter-receivers... perhaps there is no other term for the physical object and at least that is clear and not misleading (if not overly specific)..."

voice channel

phonie is quite generic in French (I have the same problem translating from and into Italian "fonia").
I was trying to open

but no luck this morning.

I offer with many grains of salt.

wireless telegraphy

In the Harrap's Shorter Dictionary French/English - English/French is the word: phonie
Phonie: Rad. Electron. wireless telegraphy, radiotelegraphy

In the Nouveau Robert Dictionary we have:
Phonie: transmission de messages parlés dans la téléphonie sans fil

Comparing both it seems that wireless telegraphy is the one.
Hope it helps
