My source text was another one, but very similar, of course, and the pictures did not show the assembly part as clearly as in the text named by Mr Keller. But it helped a lot to have a look at that text.

In your source text fig. 9 at page 13 clearly shows that the **wall stud ** is the vertical element. The horizontal lines indicated in fig. 10 are the fireplace frame.

English, the short horizontal members between wall studs are called "noggins" http://www.diydata.com/projects/partition/partition_framewor...

In American stud framing, horizontal members are called jack studs, but they're used above and below openings.

Laut obiger Montageanleitung sind es ganz eindeutig senkrechte Teile, also Pfosten. Ist von der Statik her ja auch sinnvoll.
